5 Family Changing Events

  • Slave Era (1619-1865)

    Slave Era (1619-1865)
    The slave era in America affected African American families. Many enslaved people could not legally marry. In some cases, enslaved families were all owned by the same owner. The horrible treatment of African Americans did not allow for a family environment. African American children were expected to work at young ages. The treatment of African American children, women, and men impacted their families for over 200 years.
  • The Holocaust (1933-1945)

    The Holocaust (1933-1945)
    Families were broken apart and sent to different concentration camps where many members of families were killed. Most families were broken up and sent to different camps, but some siblings, parents/children stayed together. It was nearly impossible to remain intact with your family during this time.
  • World War II (1939-1945)

    World War II (1939-1945)
    With any war comes death, depression, and devastation. Families were broken by their fathers, sons, etc... being sent off to war to fight. The roles of family members also changed as women now were working at factories to provide supplies for the war. Children were deeply affected by WWII because over 10 million kids were evacuated from their homes to endure training.

    The events on September 11th affected thousands of families in the United States. Mothers, Fathers, Daughters, Sons, Brothers, Sisters, etc... were all killed by the terrorist acts that occurred on 9/11. Families were broken apart by this horrible tragedy.
  • Legalization of Gay Marriage

    Legalization of Gay Marriage
    The legalization of gay marriage affected families in a positive way because it allowed for gay couples to become a "family." Most people who want to start a family like to be married, so the legalization of gay marriage allowed for LGBTQ members to have that part of the family structure.
