    Slavery
    The first few slaves were brought to the United States in 1619. Slavery separated many families and overall changed the way a lot of African American families operated. Parents didn't have the ability to raise their kids the way they wanted to because the parents themselves didn't have freedom and couldn't live the way they wanted. Slavery also tore many African American families apart because when the family members were auctioned off, a lot of the times they didn't get to stay together.
  • Industrial Revolution

    Industrial Revolution
    The Industrial Revolution was a time of many many new advancements. Since new technology and machinery was being invented, families didn't have to stick together to produce goods. During the revolution, work time and family time was separated and the men had to go out and work while the rest of the family stayed at home. This divided the family up since the men were away all of the time making money. Going from spending a ton of time together to being separated altered family life drastically.
  • The Holocaust

    The Holocaust began in January of 1933. The Holocaust definitely changed many families back then because it tore families apart. Children were taken from their families and brought to camps and sadly many were eventually killed.
  • WWII

    WWII
    World War II obviously changed family life in many ways. Men were getting torn from their families and sent to battle war without much notice. This caused a ton of depression and devastation due to the abrupt leaving and the high chance of death. Many men lost their lives in WWII and for that reason families were definitely changed and altered.
  • Computers/Phones/Social Media

    Computers/Phones/Social Media
    The first personal computer was created in 1981 and the internet became available in 1990. The 90's was a time of major technological advancements and changed the dynamic of families drastically. Now a days, the internet consumes children's and parents' lives and decreases the amount of time families spend together. Before the internet, families were forced to spend time together if they were bored. Now, there are so many alternatives to waste time that talking to family is almost last resort.
