Coronado spent the winter of 1540–41 at Tiguex, on the Rio Grande, and on April 23, 1541, moved east from the Rio Grande to Cicúique, down the Río Cicúique or Pecos to a bridge that had been thrown across the river, probably between present Anton Chico and Santa Rosa, and into vast level plains that are identifiable as the Llano Estacado of eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle.

The seat of Government was moved to San Antonio in 1772, where it remained until 1824. After Mexico became independent of Spain in 1821, Texas was again united with Coahuila, of which Saltillo was then the capitol.

Father hidalgo died when he was captured by the Spaniards, and was set in front of a firing team. After he was shot, they beheaded him, and displayed his head hoping that the war would end.

Stephen F. Austin had not been enthusiastic about the Texas colony, but he was true to his father's wishes. He arrived in San Antonio shortly after his father's death and negotiated with the Spanish governor on the details of the proposed colony. The first colonists arrived in Texas in December 1821.

The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a very important event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar. All but two of the Texan defenders were killed. Santa Anna's perceived cruelty during the battle inspired many Texans both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States to join the Texian Army.

About 350 Texan prisoners, including their commander James Fannin, are executed at Goliad by order of Santa Anna.
