    The Civil War was when the north and south had a dissagreement on slavery and the nation ended up dividing. The North ended up being the Union and the south became the Confedercy . Since the Confederay wanted to break away from the U.S. permantly, the Union had to fight with them fot two reasons. To unite the nationn again and end slavery.

  • The Battle of Vicksburg

    Union attempts to overtake vicksburg by land at the end of 1862 also failed. Situated on high bluffs above the river the city was seemingly impossible to capture. In the spring of 1863,Union General Grant surrounded the city by land, while his navey attacked from the river.

  • New York City Riot

    The worst riot happened. Irish immigrants rioted because of their distrust of the black slaves. The violence began with the burning of the recruiting office and spread through out the city. A dozen blacks were hanged at the hands of such riots.
  • Ceremony held to dedicate the cemetary

    A group of Pennsylvanians made a cemetary out of part of the battleground to honor both the union and confederate soldiers who died there. The prominent scholar and politician Edward Everettmade a two hour speech to honor those who died. Then, President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. It was only two minutes, but it is still know as one of the greatest speeches in American history.

    In march 1864 Lincoln appointed Ulysses S.Grant head of all Union forces. With Grant's strong support, General Sherman in the west and General Sheridan in the east planned new tactics of distruction to bring the war to a close.
