On June 1st, President George H. W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the Soviet Union, signed a treaty to end chemical weapon production in both contries, they also both agreed to drastically reduce their supplies. -
Dissolution of The Soviet Union
On December 21, 1991 Representatives of all members of the Soviet Union, except Georgia, signed the Alma-Ata protocol confirming the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On the same day, all members excpt the Baltic States and Georgia, agreed to join the CIS. Russia took the place of the USSR in The United Nations. -

President Bill Clinton signs the North American Free Trade Agreement, elliminating trade barriers between the US, Canada, and Mexico. -
The DVD media format is announced
DVD's are announced, over the next 15 years they would replace VHS tapes as the new media format, making tapes obsolete. Now they are being replaced by high-definition Blu-ray discs. -

Dolly the sheep, the first animal to be successfully cloned from a cell, is born at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. -
No funds for human cloning
On March 4th, President Clinton bars federal funding for a research on human cloning. To this day, cloning continues to be a very controversial issue. -
Titanic
At the 70th annual Academy Awards, hosted by Billy Crystal, Titanic won a record 11 Oscars including best picture. The Titanic also claimed the title of most grossing film, ever. It held on to that title for over a decade until Avatar, also a James Cameron film, claimed the title in 2010. -
