INTO THIN AIRJon Krakauer is an author and mountain climber. he has written many good books and climbed Mount Everest in 1996 when the 1996 Everest disaster happened. Rob Hall was a professional mountain climber, and he was the leader of the expedition to Mount Everest that Jon Krakauer went on.

The expedition took a helicopter to Lukla, the base camp at 9,380 feet. Lukla is a small town with an airport that many Mount Everest climbers start and end. Lukla is located in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal.

The Khumbu glacier is 2 1/2 miles of ice about 16,000 feet up on Mount Everest. It is in the Khumbu region of northeasern Nepal and flows down from the Khumbu Icefall on the southern slopes of Mount Everest.

The larynx is known as the voicebox. It is an organ in the neck of mammals involved in protection of the trachea and sound production. In the larnyx are the vocal folds, which are an important part of singing and if improperly used can result in permenant voice loss. The vocal folds are situated just below where the tract of the pharynx splits into the trachea and the esophagus.

Edema is swelling of the body and possible respiratory failure due to lack of oxygen. Some of the simtoms are sudden shortness of breath, urinating during sleep, waking up from sleeping out of breath for no reason, and other things.

The Balcony is a small platform on Mount Everest at 27,600 feet. The tops of all of the Himalayan mountains can be seen from it.
