Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal, at 1,370 meters above sea level. It is at the junction of the rivers Baghmati and Vishnumati in the Valley of Nepal. Manufacuring is based on bricks, tiles, cement, beer, timber, cigarettes, and milled rice. There is a Buddist Stupa there which is one of the most important Buddist sites in Nepal, perhaps the world, attracting tourists since the 5th century. Growth has been aided by an airport.

Base Camp 1 is at 5,208 meters up. This Base Camp is really no more than tents and is used by Everest climbers when going up the north ridge. Climbers usually rest for days to get used to the thin air. Supplies to the Camp are carried by Sherpas, sometimes with the help of animals.
