  • Library of Congress is founded

    The world's largest library and the nation's oldest federal cutural institution. With close to 100 million items, that includes materials in 460 languages. Its located in Washington D.C. close to the capital.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase was bought from France. It was more than 800,000 sq miles, which extended from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The land cost about 15 million dollars.
  • Napoleon is defeated in Russia

    Napoleon had over 500,000 men, and an equal amount of Russian men awaited them. Napoleon faced a horrible Russian winter and the widely known scorched-earth policy. He thought he could go in and make Russia ask for peace.
  • Gold Discovered in California

    James W. Marshall saw something shiny while watching over a sawmill. He discovery lead to the Gold Rush in December of 1848 when President Polk backed up the story of gold being found in California.
  • Abraham Lincoln is President

    Lincoln lead the nation through one of it's biggest crisis (1861-1865), which was the civil war. He eliminated slavery. On March 4, 1865 he took his 2nd oath of office.
  • Thomas Edison invents the light bulb

    The discovery of light took Edison the greatest amount of study and the most elaborate experiments. He said that he was never discouaged.
  • Maxim invents the machine gun

    Maxim Machine Gun was the world's first automatic machine gun. Maxim gun used the energy from the recoil force to eject each spent cartridge and insert the next one.
  • Hawaii Annexed

    Annexing Hawaii expanded the U.S. Territory into the Pacific. President William McKinley urged the U.S. to annex Hawaii.
