    Cause: Spainards looking for gold in New Mexico
    Effect: 800 pueblos killed and 500 taken into slavery, no gold was found but New Mexico was established
  • Jamestown Colony

    Cause: Founded for economic political and religious reasons
    Effect: Started America
  • French Fur Trade.

    The French came to America to set up outposts in the Great Lakes region in order to monopolize the fur trade. They befriended the Indians in region so they would only trade with the french.
  • Pilgrims/Separatists

    The Pilgrims landed in the colonies. They were looking for religious freedom and escaping the religious persecution they had faced from the Church of England.
  • Mayflower Compact

    William Bradford drafted it soon after the pilgrims reached America because they were complaining about authority. I stated that all men would come together as one civil body. The firist document of self-goverance.
  • Great Migration

    Cause: Puritans began to move in search of religious freedom
    Effect: 20,000 puritans relocated to the New World and started the Massachusetts Bay Colony
  • Massachusetts Bay Colony

    A group of wealthy puritans were granted a royal charter to settle the Massachusetts Bay area and the right to trade and religiously, peacefully, and civilly govern it.
  • Anne Hutchinson

    Led a group that criticized Boston Ministers and enouraged people to "ear" their way into heaven. Was exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony when she claimed she had a direct relationship with God. She joined Roger William's colony where her and her folllowers later created their own community.
  • Roger Williams

    A minister who believed in religious tolerance and the seperation of church and state. He was banished from the Bay colony and later bought a large piece of land from the Indians and founded Rhode Island.
  • Harvard

    Modelled after Oxford and Cambridge. The first American University. Designed to train ministers.
  • "The Bloody Tenent of Prosecution"

    Written by Roger williams, argued that you cannot force people into religion and that forced worship "stinks in God's nostrils". The ideas appealed to people and King Charles II eased up on th people.
  • Navigation Acts

    Passed by King Charles to try and control colonial trader. Also specifically excluded the Dutch.
  • Halfway Covenent

    An agreement amoung the New England colonies that said that children of church members could attend as "halfway members" (they could not take communion).

  • King Phillips War

    Puritans had been converting Indians and only the converted could stay on their land. The settlers then tried to take the Wampanoog Indians. The Wampanoog leader, known as King Phillip, started a war with the Plymouth settlers that ended with his head on a stick.
  • Bacon's Rebillion

    Nathaniel Bacon led a group of former indentured servants against the Indians. But when the colonial authorities tried to stop them they turned against Jamestown.Inspired future uprisings and made the authorities do more to keep the poorer colonists happy.
  • Salem Witchcraft Trials

    Cause: Puritan values caused aa group of attention starved girls to claim to have been bewitched
    Effect: 20 people executed and women's roles and sterotypes revealed
  • King William's War

    France and Enland fought on the New York border that ended in the Treaty of Ryswick which established peace until Queen Anne's War.
  • The Wool Act

    Prohibitted the manufacter of certain products that might compete with England. Passed after the Navigation Acts.
  • Florida Slave Policy

    Florida declared that it would be a refuge for any slaves that escaped from the English colonies. It would also welcome any escaped fugitives that would deend the colony and convert to catholicism. Caused a lot of tension between Spain and England.
  • Enlightenment

    Argued that the Univese was governed by natural laws and promoted practical knowledge, commen sense, and rationality. Appealed to commen people and focused on literature.
  • French Crescent

    The area of French land curving from New Orleans up the Mississippi River and through the Great Lakes up to St. Lawrence. Brought people into the French Colonies.
  • Middle Passage

    The ship passage from England to America, America to Africa, and Africa to England. Used in the slave trade. Unpleasant and dangerous especially for the slaves whom only one in six survived.
  • Tobacco Plantations

    Tobacco grew more popular and so did the American blend. Tobacco Plantations were created to meet the demand and thus more slave laborers were needed and slavery also became more popular.
  • Immigration Policies

    By 1700 there were 150,000 Engligh men and women in the colonies. Unlike other colonies New England did not curb it's immigration on English citizens and encouraged immigration from other countries too.

    Established by the Puritans because they believed the teachings at Harvard were too liberal. Started to train ministers but eventually worked with Enlightenment ideals.

  • Queen Anne's War

    War between England and united Franc and Spain in the Carribean. England won a substancial portion of the French land and the right to supply slaves in America.
  • Virginia Slave Code

    Declared that slaves inherited their mother's slave status and that baptism did not change a slave child's status and that death of a slave during punishment was not a felony. Became a model for other slaves.
  • Saybrook Platform

    Enacted a system of governance by which the ministers act as representatives. Created because of tension between congregational autonomy and central control. Weakened the passion and commitment of church members.
  • Indian Alliances

    The French especially had Indian alliances because their goal was benefitted by Indian cooperation. The Indians entered alliances out of fear of British expansion and Spanish slavery.
  • Poor Richards Almanac

    Almanac written by Benjamin Franklin and published in 1732. Used to bring the enlightenment concepts to the commen people.
  • Georgia

    Colony created by Parliment. Led by James Oglethorpe. Tries to prohibit slavery but found that the colony was being settled by slave planters so made slavery legal.
  • The Hat Act

    Along with the Wool Act and the Iron Act prohibitted the manufacture of certain products that might compete with England's businesses
  • Molasses Act

    To punish the British West Indian planters, banned sugar products brought from any country but Britain but wasn't strictly enforced.
  • Stono Rebellion

    Slave Rebellion: Took an armory and then tried to escape to a slave refuge in Florida
  • War of Jenkin's Ear

    War between Spain and Great Britain in the carribean. Began when a one eared sea captain named Jenkins pulled out his withered ear while testifying before the House, claiming it had been cut off by the spanish, just one of the indignities british sea captains faced at the hands of the spanish.
  • The Great Awakening

    Religous leaders started embracing emotion in religion. Caused a revival of religion and made the people embrace religion more than they ever had before.
  • Iron Act

    Along with the Wool Act and the Hat Act, prohibitted the manufacture of certain products that might compete with England.
  • "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"

    Sermon written by Jonathon Edwards, portrayed the Old Testament idea of an angry hell-bent God that would smite the people.
  • French and Indian War

    The Seven Year War, Britain vs France and Spain. Decided the future of the land between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains. Sparked the conflict between England and the Colonies.
  • Merchantiliam

    Created by European powers to make sure that any profits made from slave labor went back to the European power that slave owner belonged to. Based on the ideas of Stealing Wealth and that the world economy is a "zero sum" game in which gains equal loses.

    Unibomber suspect Theodor Kaczynski pleads guilty to all charges and a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
  • Columbine School Shooting

    Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students in their high school, one teacher and injured 21 other people when they came to school armed and fired into the crowd before commiting suicide.
  • September 11 Terrorist Attacks

    Terrorists hijacked two planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center and hijacked two more which they crashed into the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania (the passengers tried to take back the plane and it crashed into the field). Killed 2,974 people in total. Started America's war on terrorism.
  • Columbia Space Shuttle

    Shuttle disintegrates over Palestine, Texas killing all seven of it's crew members.
  • Tsunami in Asia

    A huge tsunami in the Indian Ocean destroyed several major cities in India, Indonesia, Thailand and the small surrounding countries. Killed over 23,000 people.
  • Hurricane Katrina

    The catagory three storm hit mainly New Orleans, Louisiana.It killed about 1,900 people and caused over $100 billuion dollars worth of damage. It's affects are still felt by thousands of people still pulling their lives back together.
  • Virginia Tech Shooting

    32 people were killed when Seung-Hui Cho shot at his fellow students at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University before commiting suicide. The single greatest peacetime shooting by a sngle gunman in US history.
  • 2008 Presidential Election

    Barack Obama defeats John McCain marginally and becomes the first black President of the United States of America.
  • Les Paul Dies

    The inventor of the electric guitar and the multitrack recorder died due to complications of pneumonia.
  • Pennsylvania

    Created by William Penn as a Quaker colony. The Quakers, or the Society of Friends, were looking to escape from the religious persecution they faced in England.
