    Robinson's status still on front bunner
    On the first day of the NFL scouting combine, the Texans continued contract negotiations in an effort to re-sign cornerback Dunta Robinson before he becomes an unrestricted free agent Feb. 27.
    The only way the Texans are guaranteed of keeping Robinson is designating him as the first franchise player in team history. The deadline for teams to franchise players is Feb. 19.
    After the 2008 season Robinson reportedly turned down a renegotiated contract worth $23 million.

    Cornerback Dunta Robinson expressed anger when he discovered the Texans had used the franchise designation on him.
    Robinson became the first player in team history to get the franchise tag.
    “I’m upset and frustrated because they were dishonest with me,” Robinson said. “They told me they weren’t going to franchise me. I wasn’t expecting it.”
    As the franchise player, Robinson will receive the average salary of the five highest-paid cornerbacks in the league.

    Texans general manager Rick Smith admitted that he told Dunta Robinson he would not use the franchise tag on the veteran cornerback, but changed his mind when they failed to agree on a long-term contract.
    “We had a conversation very early in the negotiation process where I indicated I didn’t want to use the franchise tag on Dunta,” Smith said at the NFL combine. I was clear about that because of the negative feelings around the tag."
    The Texans have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal.

    Another deadline passed without the Texans re-signing cornerback Dunta Robinson as the final day for NFL teams to negotiate long-term deals with players they had franchised passed.
    Robinson will not be able to negotiate a long-term deal with the Texans until the end of the 2009 season.
    If Robinson signs his franchise tag, he will get $9.957 million on the one-year contract. If he decides to sit out any point of the regular season it will cost him $585,705 per game.
