20th Century Technology Advances

  • ENIAC

    The ENIAC or known as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator is known as the first electronic computer. It was invented by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly. It occupied more than 1,800 feet and weighed almost 50 tons. It was worth around $500,000. It was created to help with the war effort against German forces.
  • Ethernet

    Robert Metcalfe invented Ethernet in 1973 while he was working for Xerox PARC. He created it so that there was a way to connect several computers to one printed.
  • First Mobile Phone Call

    The first mobile phone call was made on April 3, 1973 when Martin Cooper who was a senior engineer for Motorola called a rival telecommunications company and told them he was speaking through a mobile phone. The phone weighed around 1.1kg and took up to 10 hours just to charge.
  • Apple 1

    The Apple 1 computer is a desktop computer that was designed and hand-built by Steve Wozniak. His friend, Steve Jobs, had the idea of selling the computer. This was Apple's first product. It was released on April 11, 1976 and went on sale in July of 1976 for $666.66.
  • IBM Personal Computer

    On August 12, 1981, IBM released it's first personal computer, known as the IBM PC. It was created by a team of engineers under the direction of Don Estridge. Pricing for the computer started at $1,565.
  • World Wide Web

    The World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee. He is a British computer scientist who grew up in London. He laid out his vision that would become the web in a proposal called "Information Management: A Proposal." It was not immediately accepted but through more work would become the foundation of today's web.
  • WiFi

    In 1997, electronics companies agree to make Wi-Fi a worldwide standard for wireless internet. This is also when the first version of the 802.11 protocol is released that provided up to 2 Mbps link speeds.
