    Early Life of a Prominent American Influence

    Dewey was born in Vermont and later attended Uni. of Vermont. Here, he was exposed to Darwinian evolutionary theory which "continued to have a life-long impact upon Dewey’s thought"(Field). Dewey soon became faculty in the Uni. of Michigan after receiving a Phd from John Hopkins. He published two works in 1887-88, "which expressed Dewey’s early commitment to Hegelian idealism"(Field). Soon thereafter, he followed a colleague to Uni. of Chicago where his view of idealism shifted to pragmatism.

    His time at University of Chicago resulted in four essays collectively entitled Thought and its Subject-Matter, later published at Chicago under the collective title Studies in Logical Theory (1904).

    Mid-Life and Career

    Dewey and other philosophers started the "Chicago Group" of philosophy, creating literature supporting their newfound style. "Their new style of psychology, later dubbed functional psychology, had a practical emphasis on action and application."(Wikipedia) During this time he also became deeply involved with reforming educational practices and traveled the world.
