1st Semester Review

  • The Telegraph is Invented

    Invented by Samuel Morse. First form of instant communication. It could be used by shopkeepers to order supplies and it could be used for personal reasons (ex. contact relatives, ect.) Later connected to Europe, bringing the U.S. and Europe closer together.
  • The Homestead Act

    Gave 160 acres of free land to any settler who would live on the land for 5 years, farm the land, and give part of his money to the government. This helped the expansion of the U.S. westward.
  • The End of the Civil War

    This ended the war between the northern states and the southern states. Slavery was abolished.
  • The Transcontinental Railroad is Completed

    This connected the western side of the U.S. to the the eastern side. This made it easier to make business deliveries, travel, ect.
  • Boss Tweed is Jailed

    Boss Tweed was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to 12 years in jail.
  • The Telephone is Invented

    Invented by Alexander Graham Bell. Developed a device that could transmit speech. Telephone lines are set up all over the world, bringing people closer.
  • The Battle of Little Bighorn

    Sioux ambushed General Custer and his troops after they broke a treaty that said they would stay away from the Black Hills. This was the greatest and last victory for the Native Americans.
  • The End of Reconstruction

    This put the United States back together as a whole after the Civil War.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    This kept the Chinese from entering the U.S. for 10 years. The law was added to again in 1892 and 1902.
  • The Pendleton Act

    Established the civil service commission to set up competitive examinations for federal jobs. By 1900 the commission controlled the hiring of many federal employees.
  • Time Zones were Created

    This made it easier for trains to keep on schedule and kept the U.S. time organized.
  • The Dawes Act

    This stated that the Native Americans could leave the reservations and live on given plots of land. The hope was that the Native Americans would become farmers and American citizens.
  • The Battle of Wounded Knee

    U.S. Troops killed many Native Americans because of fighting outbreaks when taking weapons from them (because of the Ghost Dance)
  • The Sherman Anti-Trust Act

    This act was passed to make monopolies illegal.
  • Ellis Island Opens

    This allowed immigrants to legally enter the United States (in New York)
  • Model T is Invented

    Introduced the idea of the assembly line. First car offered that was cheap enough for everyone to purchase, not just the rich.
