During the reign of Isabell II there was a liberal monarchy and an alteration in power between the Moderates and Progressives. There was a second Carlist War (1846-1849), that was ended with the defeat of the Carlists. Discontent among the peasants because of poor working conditions caused a social instability. Expropiations that aimed to solve Spain's economic problems by paying the state's debt and breaking up large estates. -

The war was fought to facilitate the marriage of Isabella II with the Carlist pretender, Carlos de Borbón. Was supported by some doctrinaire elements from the moderate party and by the Carlists.The war caused between 3,000 and 10,000 casualties. -
