Beginning December 20, 1989 and ending on January 3, 1990, the United States invaded Panama. America invaded Panama because Panama's dictator, Manuel Noriega, had been accused of many crimes, including suppressing democracy. Noriega's defenses were quickly defeated, and he surrendered in January. However, this invasion was a very hot topic because some claimed that the U.S. had violated international law. -
On November 7, 1991, NBA All-Star, Magic Johnson, decided to retire from the National Basketball Association. He announced his retirement after a medical test resulted in a positive case of the disease HIV. This shocked the nation because it was sudden and unexpected. However, this announcement would change the public's perspective on diseases like this, and it would increase awareness of HIV and AIDS. -
In 1992, LAPD officers were tried in court after being caught beating an unarmed black man. The name of this man was Rodney King. However, the officers involved were not found guilty of any crime and freed from their punishments. This verdict sparked outrage in California and caused protesting and riots. This event showed the injustice faced by African Americans and how American citizens can become united from a shared cause. -
Hurricane Andrew was a devastating storm that hit the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana in August of 1992. Hurricane Andrew was first classified as a tropical storm, but it sooner became labeled as a category 5 hurricane. It was the strongest hurricane to ever hit Florida, also causing major damage in the Bahamas and Louisiana. Homes were lost and people were killed by Hurricane Andrew. -
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was an agreement between America, Canada, and Mexico, and it was passed into law by Bill Clinton. This pact would remove all tariffs and trading restrictions between these North American countries, and it would go into effect in 1994. NAFTA would allow for total free trade between these nations, therefore, benefitting the economies of each. -
On October 16, 1995, over one million African American men marched throughout Washington D.C. This march was used to promote African American unity in the United States, and it was organized by a man named Louis Farrakhan. The Million Man March caused over 1.4 million African Americans to become a registered voter. Although this event was not supported by some African American leaders, such as Mary Frances Berry, it effected the African African community very positively. -
On July 27, 1996, a bomb was set off during the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. The explosion killed a mother and injured over a hundred others. However, the man who had planted the bomb was not discovered until two years later. This act of domestic terrorism would cause international grief and cause everyone to seek justice for the mother killed and others injured. -
On December 26, 1996 a young child named JonBenet Ramsey was reported missing from her home. However, her parents had also found a ransom note demanding over $100,000 in exchange for the kidnapped girl. Later that day, her body was discovered in the basement of the home. The case of her murder is a mysterious one because the killer is unknown. The murder of JonBenet Ramsey created a spark of nation wide interest in the case and justice for the young girl. -
On March 24, 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also known as NATO, launched bombing assaults against Yugoslavia. These strikes were initiated because Serbian forces were attempting to do an ethnic cleansing. They wanted to eliminate Kosovar Albanians. These assaults lasted until June 10 of that year when Serbs would pull their forces out of Kosovo and make a peace agreement. -
On April 20th, 1999, two high schoolers named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 innocent people. These teenagers went to their high school, Columbine High School, in Colorado in an attempt to set a bomb off. However, when the bomb did not explode as planned, they decided to use guns and shoot students and teachers. They killed 13 people and wounded over 20 others. This terrible massacre lead to a desire for increased gun restrictions by most American citizens.
