Bush ordered the operation "Just Because" on Panama to capture Manuel Noriega, the country’s military dictator, who had been charged for trafficking drugs into the US. 80% of the Americans approved of the order. President Bush said that this invasion was to safeguard the lives of US residents in Panama, defend democracy and humans rights, protecting treaties that Jimmy Carter had signed with Panama, and to fight against a country that had been increasing drug trafficking. -
The basketball legend, Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced to the public his retirement from the LA Lakers because he tested positive for HIV. HIV, at the time, was viewed as the gay white man's disease and looked down upon. He was one of the first athletes to announce testing positive while being heterosexual. He finished out his season with the Lakers and played a little while after. He is now. spokesperson for HIV/Aids and very successful. -
Four police officers in LA were freed of any charges against them for beating a black civilian, Rodney King. King was being chased by four police officers and surrendered. He was intoxicated and refused to be arrested. After, violent protests in LA arose. Protesters blocked freeway traffic, looted and destroyed buildings and started fires. The police officers were later charged with assault. -
One of the most devastating natural disasters, Hurricane Andrew, hit the U.S. on August 13, 1992. It hit FLorida and hit hard in Louisiana. Not only was the hurricane itself brutal but the aftermath was even worse. The storm was a category 5 and resulted in 26 direct deaths. Many people were left homeless, without power, and with missing family members for several months after the storm. Economic problems arose and many people in inland Florida could not receive supplies. -

OJ SImpson, a former football player, was aquitted for murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, who were stabbed to death in 1994. Simpson was suspected and led police on a chase that questioned his innocence. African Americans believed that he was innocent while white Americans believed he was guilty. This created a racial divide in America. On October 3, he was found not guilty, however, 4 months later he was proved to be guilty. The trial lasted 8 months. -
On July 17, the flight broke up over the Atlantic Ocean right off the shore of Long Island. All 230 passengers aboard died. Many people believe that the plane was a victim of a missile or that it was shot down. However, since the explosion was so close to shore, there were many witnesses. The FBI finalized the case saying that the explosion was a result of a combustible mixture of fuel and air in the centre wing fuel tank. -
In Atlanta, Georgia, July 27, a bomb was placed in the Olympic Park during the 1996 Olympics. The XXVI SUmmer Olympiad is destroyed by the bomb and over 100 people are injured. The bomb was set off during a free concert in the park. Apparently, police knew about the bomb before it went off but were too late. People were upset that the police didn't do anything about the bomb. -
President CLinton arranged for the bombing to take place in 1999 to halt the widespread evidence of urban cleansing. The US also wanted to stop the potential of a genocidal war. This was the first time that the NATO enforced military action without it being approved by the United Nations Security council. The troops were stationed in Italy and Germany. -
Two high school students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, shot up a high school in Littleton, Colorado. They killed 13 people, wounded 20 people, and then killed themselves. At the time, this was the worst school shooting and started a national debate on gun control and school safety. Investigators speculated that the shooters targeted minorities, Christians, and athletes.
