  • Americans With Disabilities Act

    Americans With Disabilities Act
    The Americans With Disabilities Act was signed in 1990 by George W Bush. Its goal was to protect those with disabilites against discrimination. Under the Act, a disability is classified by both mental or physical consitions and it stated that it doesnt have to be permanent to be considered a disability. This Act applies to any company trying to hire, fire or that has any other terms and conditions. Everyone should be treated equal.
  • Clarence Thomas

    Clarence Thomas
    As Thurgood Marshall retired from the Supreme Court, George Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to take over. If selected, he would be the second African-American to hold a position in Court. During several hearings, Thomas was asked about his position concerning the case Roe V. Wade, about abortion. He had no position. Later hearings discovered allegations by Anita Hill, a former co-worker, about Thomas and unwanted sexual comments. After vigoras hearings, the senate voted Thomas 52 to 48 into Court

    Hurricane Andrew
    The last big hurricane in Florida was in 1965, Hurricane Betsy. Almost 30 years later, South Florida was hit with 145-175 mph winds that spread 40 miles across in a category five hurricane. Hurricane Andrew held ground zero in Homestead Florida on August 24. It led to 65 deaths and nearly $26 billion dollars in destruction. A quarter of a million poeple were left homeless and billions without power. Since then,Florida continues to revise building codes to ensure the strength to hopefully hold.

    Blackhawk Down
    Touching down in Somalia on October 3rd led to the death of 18 Americans and a bloody battle. The mission was to take down one of the most powerful warlords in the country, Mohammed Farah Aidid. Aidid and his militia had been overtaking food shipments and had killed several Pakistani troops. There was talk about Aidid and lieutenants meeting in Mogadishu, which the US now planned to raid. On their way back to base, with prisoners, one of the helicopters was hit and America was now under fire.

    North American Free Trade Agreement
    The NAFTA was signed into law in late 1993, but offically was put into act starting January 1, 1994. It was a trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada. The agrrement eliminated tarrifs(taxes) and nontariff barriers as well as established standards concerning health, safety and industries. There was now no limit on the financial opportinities that the agreement presented, more of the population were able to invest. The US, Mexico and Canada became the largest free market in the world.

    Harding/ Kerrigan Scandal
    Tonya Harding is an American figrure skating, she began being noticed in 1991 when she won a national title and was the first woman to complete a trick in competition. Her ex-husband hired someone to take out Nancy Kerrigan at Olympic Trials. Kerrigan was hit in the knee with a metal baton bruising her kneecap and quadricep tendons. She was prevented from competeing in the US Championships, but went to win silver at the 1994 games. Harding was bannded from competing in the US for life.

    Explosions of TWA Flight 800
    Was it a terrorist attack or just an accident? 12 minutes after Flight 800's takeoff from JFK airport in New York, the plane exploded and went down in the Atlantic Ocean. 212 passangers and 18 crew members died in the crash,no survivors. The plane headed for Rome, Italy was up 15,000 feet when presumably there was an engine failure, due to previous actions at JFK. TWA Flight 800 is logged in the top five worst plane crashes in history. In 2013 a movie was made about the crash and investigation.

    Matthew Shepards Story
    In the 1990's, America was still having trouble accepting any LGBT members or supporters into the community. In 1998, Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming was attacked, tied to a fence and left for dead in Laramie Wyo. He later died in Fort Collins hospital surronded by family and friends. His parents hope to spread the word about his story and in hope to inspire people to fight for equality.

    NATO boming in Yugoslavia
    The bombing in Yugoslavia was aimed towards Serbian military postitions locatied in Yugoslavia. NATO was fighting back against a new wave of ethnic cleansing that was launched by Serbian forces just four days earlier. It was aimed to stop the abuses of human rights in Kosovo. The strike lasted for two and a half months with constant air strikes. An end result of the bombs was Yugoslav forces leaving Kosovo, but along came around 500 civilian deaths.

    Columbine Shooting
    This time 17 years ago, the state of Colorado was in shock. Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado was under fire by two attending teenagers. In their wake was the death of 13 and 20 wounded. An hour after beginning their killing spree, the two boys turned and shot themselves. This school shooting started a national debate about gun control, who was allowed to purchase one and on what conditions, as well as school safety, how could two boys walk in with a gun and not be caught?
