1960's

  • Vietnam War

People opposed the war, but more importantly, this caused an increase in government spending. This helped the economy continue its cycle by putting money into the economy. One downside was it did increase taxes for Americans
  • Kennedy's Campaign Promise

During the 1960 election, Kennedy promised to help fix the economy if he was elected president because it was suffering at the end of the fifties. When Kennedy was elected, he got America moving and sent Congress economic growth and recovery package.
  • USSR Tests Hydrogen Bomb

The USSR caused one of the most massive explosions in the world's history and this sent a message to the United States. So, the U.S. government started spending at almost record numbers to continue the arms race so the USSR wouldn't pass us up and they would be just as afraid of us as we were of them.
  • Inflation

Inflation was at its most stable point and corporate profits were at a record high in the U.S.
  • President Johnson's "Great Society"

Created Medicare, Medicaid, $2 Billion set aside to tackle poverty, increased funding for education
  • General Motors

General Motors contributed to the growing economy by expanding its own company. They had larger incomes than every single farm put together in the U.S. at this time.
  • President Johnson Passes Medicare Bill

Johnson passed a Medicare bill that helped the elderly through a new program. To pay for this, it would need to come out of taxpayer dollars and would again raise taxes.
  • NOW Created

The National Organization for Women put women in the mainstream life of an American person. This created more job opportunities for women, which would cause more money going through the cycle. With this, women would also receive a higher paycheck.
  • Super Bowl No.1

The first Super Bowl aired and it was the Kansas City Chiefs v. Green Bay Packers. (Go Chiefs!). It broke the record for citizens viewing one program with forty million watching. This helped expand the television market and helped people realize that there was good stuff to watch and television wasn't just a waste of money. After the Super Bowl, television sales had a half decent spike in sales.
  • Apollo 8

NASA spent $18 billion on this single mission, which part would need to come out of taxpayer money. Also, besides the cost of the mission, this would have had major rating all across America. This would have helped the channels that broadcasted this event and just the television business, in general, expand their sales and markets.
