    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Robinson was born with the name of Walker Smith Jr. was a well known boxer in the 50s. Sugar won the New York Golden Gloves Championship in 1940. ( was 19 years old). Sugar was world welterwieght champion in 1946( held title for 5 years before moving on) and had a 91 winning streak. He was 38 when he won his last middleweight title. Sugar had 84 knockouts at the high point of his career( was never physically knocked out)

    Korean War
    The war did a bunch of damage socially and conomicly on Korea.Economicly because after three years of bombing in North Korea left only a few buildings standing.It cost a lot to rebuild everything.And soscialy because it brought the issues and differences between the north and south back.It also had positive effects on the world.The war boosted the economy of the us and Japan for they were suppling weapons.But the main effect on America was it showed we would do to stop communism.

    The Drive-In Movies, were invented by Richanrd Hollingshead in Camden,New Jersey. The Drive-In Movies consists of paying your admission price and parking your car in your designated parking spot. Now you can tune your radio to the station and watch the movie playing on the screen,but remeber since they play the movies outside, the earliest show is at twilight.
  • Eisenhower

    Eisenhower
    Eisenhower was a WW2 commander and was elected for president in 1952. Eisenhower approved McCarron -walkter immigration act, 1952 , helpped with the interstate Highway act, and approved the joinment of Alaska and hawaii. He also helpped send Explorer 1 and much more during his presidency. ( january 20, 1952 - jan 20, 1961)

    Lew Hoad
    Lew Hoad was a well known tennis player in the 50s. He was born in 1953 in Sydney, Australia. He had a close friend, named Ken Rosewall, who he later played with. they won the davis cup together in 1953.Hoad later won the French and Australian double titles. He won Wimbledon 5 times and was the first player to win consecutive singles titles. Hoad later retired to live in Spain were he died at age 59 of a heart attack.

    A fashion in the 50s was the famous poodle skirt. Now they are known for the poodle on the side but what most people do not know is that in the 50s the poodle was not the only thing on the side. It could be anything you wanted. It was a way to show your individuality and uniqueness. That is what they were known for. The uniqueness and feminine style. They were a way for teens to show off their style and poodle skirts were also great for dancing.

    A type of entertainment for a family was atrip to a national park. The 50s were the first time the parks were a big hit. That is why this was known as the decadefor new national parks. New parks were all over the world. Some parks are still here today.
  • Saddle Shoes

    Saddle Shoes were the most prefered shoes ,for girls, in the 50s and are considred and all-american shoe.They came in several diffrent colors but were most commonly found in blac kand white. They were created originally in 1906 by spalding for sports.(mainly tennis and squash). Tennis players eventually replaced the" saddle shoe" but golfers still use them. Saddle shoes were worn with ankle high Bobby socks,cuffed jeans,white blouses, and poddle skirts.

    Everyone knows of the famous act that Rosa Parks did in 55. She refused to obey the bus drivers orders to give her seat up to a white passenger. Parks won many medals and honors for her bravery. ThIs simple act became an important symbol to the Civil Rights Movement.

    President Dwight D. Eisenhower sighned the Act in 1956 and since then, it has become a great part of our coulture. It effects everyone, whether its our form of daily transporation, construction job openings, or the transportation of the clothes and goods we wear.

    A vacine for the disease called Polio was developed and tested by Jonas Salk. Polio was becoming an issue in the 50s. It effects the nervous sysyem and may eventually cause full paralysis. So salk invented the vaccine. Polio is wiped out throughout the world because almost everybody is vaccinated for it.

    Eplorer 1
    Eplorer 1 was a satellite launched on Jan. 31, 1958. It sent back strong radio signals that could even be picked up by thoes of inexperience. If they hadn't launched this satellite we wound not have our telephones or other electronic/ satellited devieses that we own today.

    Hawaii was added to the US in 1959 because the United States grew worried that Great Britain or France would make Hawaii part of their empire. They also realized that hawaii was becoming an important commercial export rescource and a great place for defence in the Pacific Region,

    On March 30, 1867 the US bought Alaskafrom Russia for $7.2 million( about 2 cents per acer). They owned Alaska but they didnt add it to the US as a state until January 3, 1959 for various unknown reasons.
