1914-1929

  • Britain Declared war on Germany

On August fourth, 1914, Britain declared war on Germany which automatically sent Canada to war as well because they are allied with Britain. I would rate this a -2 because it is terrible going into a war and losing so many soldiers.
  • The Battle of Somme

One of the worst battles in the war for the Canadian and British forces was the battle of Somme, there were just under 60,000 British and Canadian soldiers killed. I would rate this a -2 because of the insane amount of casualties.
  • The Wartime Election Act

The Wartime Election Act allowed females who are somehow of relation to the active soldiers, any person who was born in an enemy country was not allowed to vote also people who spoke an enemy language were not allowed to vote.
  • The Prohibition

The prohibition was a solution to the soldiers coming back from the war who were getting drunk every day off of liquor and this lead to abuse. I would rate this a -1 because obviously abuse is terrible and it brought the selling of illegal alcohol.
  • The Treaty of Versailles

In the palace of Versailles, in the treaty 32 winning countries were named, by the end of the war Canada was much more recognized in the world. I would rate this a +1 because the war is over and things are begging to go back to the way they were before.
  • The General Strike

the general strike was when the metal trades council voted to go on strike due to not getting paid enough, not working in good conditions, and better-timed schedules. I would rate this a 0 because a strike is never good because it delays things but if the workers really feel like they deserve more they should fight for it.
  • The General Strike Pt 2

the general strike lasted for around 37 days straight and basically turned into riots on the streets, people turned over cars, and when the mountain police interveined onto the crowds one person died and thirty others were injured, the strike ended five days after this. I would rate this a -1 because of the person dead and people injured
  • League of Indians

in the 1920s the only aboriginals who had the right to vote were aboriginals who fought in the war but they could only vote if they gave up being aboriginal, which isn't fair because they want to vote but also want to keep their heritage. the league of Indians was created in the 1920s which gave aboriginals a bigger voice which helped them get better healthcare and financial aid. I would rate this a +1 because it is aboriginals fighting for their rights and I think that is important.
  • Insulin

In the early 1920s, a large amount of North America had diabetes, in 1922 a doctor in Ontario named Frederick Banting discovered a treatment for diabetes, the treatment was called insulin, and the number of people who died due to diabetes rapidly decreased.
  • The Pension Act

The pension act gave Men over the age of 70 a pension of $240 per year and Women only received the pension if they were widows, also if the person is earning more than $365 annually you could not qualify for the pension.
