  • 1774

    Colonists form First Continental Congress as Britain closes down Boston harbor and deploys troops in Massachusetts.
  • American Revolution begins!

    George Washington leads the Continental Army to fight against British rule.
  • Slavery starts being abolished in the North!

    Northern States start making slavery illegal. A huge step in the right direction!
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence endorsed by congress. The colonies declare independence from Britain.
  • Surrender at Saratoga

    A British army of 6,000 at Saratoga, N.Y. The American victory convinces Frace to join the war alongside the Americans.
  • Surrender at Yorktown

    A large British army surrenders at Yorktown, VA. This effectively ends the civil war
  • Treaty of Paris

    Britain accepts the loss and signs a treaty with the US in Paris. This is most commonly known as "The Treaty of Paris" and this formally ends the American Revolutionary War.
  • Constitution is made!

    Founding Fathers create the U.S Constitution in Phildelphia. Constitution comes into effect around 1788.
  • First President!

    George Washington is elected as the first-ever president in the United States.
  • Bill of Rights is ratified!

    The Bill of Rights' first ten amendments were ratified. This gave fundamental rights to citizens such as the Freedom of Speech.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    The United States bought 828,000 square miles west of the Mississippi River from France. The totals to about $15 million dollars back then. The totals to about $258,697,425.53 in today's money!
  • Slavery in the North

    The last Northern State finally abolishes slavery in 1804!
  • Atlantic Slave Trade abolished!

    The Atlantic Slave trade is finally abolished! This means slave trade is slowing down drastically!
  • War of 1812 Begins!

    The Americans had enough with Great Britain. Impressment and sanctions are becoming an issue and the Americans wanted to deal with it. So, Americans declare a war of Great Britain
  • The War of 1812 Ends!

    Forces under General Jackson forced out the British at New Orleans. This happened two weeks after a peace treaty was already signed at Ghent.
  • Missouri Comprimise

    US congress approves the Missouri Compromise. The compromise is meant to keep a balance between North and South in terms of land and power.
  • The Battle of the Alamo

    The Battle of the Alamo was a famous part of the Texas Revolution. In 1836, General Santa Anna and his troops attacked the Alamo Mission. All but two of the Texan troops were killed in this battle.
  • The Telegrah

    The first message sent by telegraph is sent from Washington to Baltimore! Hue step in communication technologies
  • Striking Gold!

    An unidentified person found gold at Sutter's Mill - A mill in California. This sparked a huge interest in finding gold and a very large amount of people moved to California with hopes of finding gold. A very little percentage actually found any gold.
  • The Dred Scott Desicion

    The US Supreme Court hands down the Dred Scott decision basically saying that slaves are property and slaves have no rights
  • Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln is elected as the 16th President of The United States.
  • Shots Fired at Fort Sumter

    Southern forces fire at Fort Sumter at Charleston, South Carolina. This begins one of the most bloody wars America has ever faced. The Civil War
  • Emacipation!

    Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation proclamation. This proclamation stated that all slaves in the South were free.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    The bloodiest battle during the Civil War. It is estimated that there were 51,000 casualties and with 7,863 of those deaths.
  • End of The American Civil War

    The North and South fought on and on until the Confederate surrender at the Battle of Palito Ranch. This is the final battle of the Civil War. By the end of the Civil War, there were about 618,222 deaths in total. This is the greatest total of any American War.
  • Abraham Lincoln Murdered

    Pres. Lincoln attended Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. While there a certain man by the name of John W. booth shot lincoln in the back once before making a break for it. Lincoln dies the next day from his injuries

    The Mexican-American War

    The Mexican-American War was fought between the US and Mexico. The main cause of the war is westward expansion. The US felt that they should have the right for the west but so did Mexico. This conflict eventually turned into a full-blown war lasting about 2 years.

    The Spanish-American War was a war between the United States and Spain. This war started because the Americans interfered in the Cuban War of Independence.
