  • Jamestown Establishment

    Jamestown, Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in North America, and marked the beginning of the English colonization of North America. The settlers faced multiple setbacks like disease, harsh weather, and conflicts with the native Americans. Captain John Smith was the leader of the colony. Jamestown colony's economy was highly influenced by Tobacco production which became a major cash crop. Jamestown also marked the beginning of slavery in the English colonies.
  • Arrival of Indentured Servants (slavery)

    The arrival of the first African indentured servants to the English Colonies.
  • Plymouth colony

    Separatists that wanted religious freedom set out to the new world for religious and economic freedom. In September of 1620 the separatists and other non puritan settlers boarded the mayflower ship in Plymouth English and eventually reached the cape cod, Massachusetts. The mayflower compacts was then created and stated the guidelines for self governance. It was a social contract that stated the principals for the colony.
  • End of the Virginia Company

    The Virginia company's charter was revoked. And eventually, Virginia became a royal colony, under the rule of the English due to financial and political disputes.
  • The Pequot War

    This war was caused by conflicts between Native Americans and English colonists. Some of the conflicts included competition for resources, cultural differences, religious differences, and trade disputes.
  • The Maryland Toleration Act

    This act took place in the Maryland colony and provided religious freedom and security. This meant that Protestants and Catholics were able to practice their religions without being prosecuted.
  • The (first) Navigation Act

    This act made it mandatory for all goods that were imported into England or its colonies to be transported on English ships.
  • The (second) Navigation Act

    This act made it mandatory for certain goods like tobacco, sugar, or cotton to be exported to only England or the English colonies.
  • The (third) Navigation Act

    This act made it mandatory for all European goods to first land in England where they would be taxed and inspected before they were exported to the colonies. This act was also known as the Staple Act.
  • The (fourth) Navigation Act

    The purpose of this act was to further enforce the previous three acts and increase the number of selected goods to which the acts would be applied to.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    This rebellion took place in the Virginia Colony and was lead by Nathaniel Bacon who felt that the government favored the Native Americans. The rebellion was caused by economy discontent (taxes, low crop prices, and lack of available land) and conflicts between colonists and Native Americans.
  • The Glorious Revolution

    King James II was overthrown and the ascension of William and Mary took place. This also led to consequences to governance of the American colonies
  • The Salem Witch Trials

    A series of trials in Massachusetts where women were executed if they were thought to be a witch. This set of trials had many social and legal consequences.
