  • Jamestown

    Jamestown was the first permanent settlement in North America. It was established by the London Company in Southeast Virginia.
  • Smallpox outbreak in America

    Smallpox was brought by European settlers colonizing in America, causing the outbreak of an Epidemic. The Native's immune systems were weak to the virus because it had not yet been exposed to it. Because of this, the epidemic killed 90 percent of Natives
  • First enslaved Africans arrive in English America

    20-30 Africans land at Point Comfort (Fort Monroe) aboard the White Lion English ship. These Africans were traded in exchange for supplies and goods. Later, more enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia. This event marks the start of race-based bondage that defined the African American experience for years to come.
  • Plymouth Colony

    The Plymouth Colony is established by Pilgrims who arrived from England in their ship, the Mayflower. The Pilgrims signed and established the Mayflower Compact, an agreement that formed the basis of the colony's government.
  • The Indian Massacre

    The Indian Massacre took place in the English colony of Virginia. The town's tobacco economy caused the settlers' constant expansion and seizure of Powhatan land. Because of this growing conflict, the Natives came unarmed with a variety of provisions to sell to colonists and then grabbed whatever tools or weapons they could find to attack and kill as many English Settlers as they could.
  • New Amsterdam

    New Amsterdam, a Dutch settlement, is established at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. It served as the seat of the colonial government in New Netherland
  • The Massachusetts Bay Colony

    The Massachusetts Bay colony was an English settlement on the coast of North America. It was founded by the citizens of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was their second attempt at colonization.
  • The English takeover of New Amsterdam

    The English sent a fleet to seize New Netherlands because of the value and status of its trading ports and commerce. The colony peacefully surrendered. The English then renamed the colony 'New York' after the Duke of York.
  • Charleston is founded

    Charleston was founded in 1670, named as Charles Town to honor King Charles II, at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River.
  • Bacon's Rebellion erupts in Virginia

    The Bacon Rebellion was an armed rebellion held by Virginia settlers. It was led by Nathaniel Bacon to rebel against Colonial Governor William Berkeley after he refused Bacon's request to drive Native American Indians out of Virginia. Thousands of Virginians from all races and classes rose up against Berkeley, chasing him out of Jamestown and torching the settlement.
  • The Salem Witch Trials

    The Salem Witch Trials were a series of trials for people who were accused of using witchcraft. It represented America's first major instance of mass hysteria. The trials raised major conflicts and hurt the idea of theocracy.
