The relationship between New Orleans and Geography

  • Action Against the Flooding

    Action Against the Flooding
After people have started settling in what is now New Orleans, they have realized that there is a cost to staying there. That is, flooding and hurricanes. In 1752, actions are finally being taken to prevent these natural disasters, and to find ways to live with them. This was important to the cities history because disasters like these prevented the small city from being a successful town.
  • Taxes for Damage

    Taxes for Damage
Since the flooding, there has been a huge amount of money spent on the repairs of the city. Beacause of this, laws are being made to tax people for the damage.
  • Rise In Technology

    Rise In Technology
Improvements in technology are helping the people deal with floods in a way they never thought they could. Engineers have developed a more efficient way to build levees and sea barriers. And this is beneficial because the town has such a high population that could be in danger due to flooding.
  • The Disapearing Wetlands

    The Disapearing Wetlands
New Orleans' wetlands are disapearing at a fast rate. This is because of the growing population. The people weren't aware this would be a problem but wetlands are a target of hurricanes. If the town wouldn't have moved in, the impact of Hurricane Katrina could have been much less
  • The Plan

    The Plan
The first plan for hurricanes is developed. This gives the people somewhat of a warning that gives them more of a stability in living in New Orleans. Also, the plan protected the city for hurricanes at or below a category three.
  • Hurricane Katrina

    Hurricane Katrina
Unfortunately for New Orleans, protection didn't didn't stop Mother Nature from unleashing her fury. Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst disasters recorded in U.S. history, killing over 1,000 people and damaging over 100,000 homes.
