    This shows important events in India's History between 1910 and 2010. Each event has its own significance.
  • 1910-1919

    The Partition of Bengal is annulled. The new provinces of Bihar and Orissa are formed. Also, plans to move capital from Calcutta to Delhi are announced.
    This is important because now india has two new provinces. And now plans to have a new capital.
  • 1920's

    The first woman president of Indian National Congress was Sarojini Naidu when she was elected President for the Kanpur session.
    Important because this means that women are recieving more rights and now they have someone in power.
  • 1930's

    The Government of India Act was passed in the British Parliament. This created an All-Indian Federation based on provincial autonomy.
    India now has a governent and now they can start making their own decisions.
  • 1940's

    India achieves independence and incorporates West Bengal and Assam. Also, Jawaharlal Nehru becomes prime minister of India. Pakistan is created and incorporates East Bengal and territory in the northwest.
    India is now its own country and has its own form of government and it is free.
  • 1950's

    The Constitution comes into force making India a republic. Also, declares Kashmir and Jammu into the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
    India now has a constituion to put in a form of government.
  • 1960's

    Indira Ghandi is elected prime minister.
    This significant because India has a new leader that may lead them to peace.
  • 1970's

    India's population passed the 500 million mark. Its long-standing food crisis was resolved with greatly improved agricultural productivity.
    This important because it shows how India has one of the world's fastest growing populations. Also, they have one of the biggest populations in the world.
  • 1980's

    The Prime Minister, Indira Ghandi, was killed by her own bodyguards and communal violence erupted in Delhi and parts of Punjab, causing the deaths of thousands of people.
    This is important because India still has violence within its country.
  • 1990's

    Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is assassinated. He was killed by a Tamil suicide bomber in southern India during the election campaign.
    This is important because it shows that there is still chaos in India especiaslly over political matters.
  • 2000's

    Clashes between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir kill 17 people. Violence in the region has become a daily occurrence as it prompted the deployment of an extra 3,000 troops by the government.
    This is important to Indian History because there is still violence in that region and Ghandi fought and died to promote peace.
