Julilly Meets Liza at the Riley Plantation
Julily is sold to the Riley Plantation which is a very siginificant event because if she wasn’t sold, she wouldn’t have met Liza as well as Alexander Ross which are two important characters throughout the story, including the plot. -
The Theme- Friendship
During Julilly's arrival to the Riley Plantation, Julily comes across of an Abolitionist and a free black boy who provides her water. This is one of the major events in the story considering the fact that it reveals the main themes of the story which is friendship, since the boy showed friendship by supplying Julilly water to drink from his gourd. -
Lester and Adam's Chains Get Stuck in a Swamp
Lester and Adam are tied up with chains while the slaves that are sold head to the Riley Plantation. Furthermore, both Lester and Adam get their chains caught in the swamps and Julily assists them out which displays the theme of friendship in the story as well as the mood which is very tense and serious. As Julilly is empathetic, a bond gets created between them which takes place later in the story. -
Liza and The Riley Plantation
When Julilly arrives to the slave quarters, she realizes how it's extremely quiet and not a single person there talked to her and welcomed her. However,a girl name Liza welcomes and introduces her to the place, which is a very important event since she goes along with Julilly to their escape to Canada. -
Julilly's Assistance in Cotton Picking
Julilly assists Liza in cotton picking by helping her in picking cotton that Liza can't reach so she can fill up her crocker sack without Sims whipping her, which once again shows friendship -
Alexander Ross's Arrival to the Riley Plantation
Alexander Ross arrives to the Riley Plantation, by lying to Sims that he came to study birds' about their physiology, classification, ecology, and behaviour since he mentioned he was an ornithologist. Nevertheless, this is a significant event because he came to assist the slaves to go to Canada and be free, which displays the main theme in the story friendship. -
The Talk About Going to Canada
In the Slave Cabins, Julily talks to the other girls about Canada and how it must be like to be free. Furthermore, the girls were talking about the North Star and this is important as this is what builds Julilly's desire to go to Canada and it is the turning point of the story. -
The Meeting In Piney Woods
There is a meeting in Piney Woods which includes Mr. Ross as well as Lester and Adam in it and this is a significant event because it was regarding the plan for escaping to Canada and this is when Julily and Liza find out from Lester that Alexander Ross isn't here to check for birds but to help slaves escape to Canada successfully. -
The Beginning of The Escape to Canada
Julily, Liza, Lester, Adam, and Mr. Ross finally depart from the Riley Plantation which is a significant event because the mood, the setting, andthe characterization is slowly changing and this event is important as it is the beginning to the solution of the plot in this story. -
Arriving to Tennessee
The slaves arrive at Tennessee and they are taken to the another journey by a conductor in the Underground Railway and the use of the password “Friend with a friend” is a big indication of the theme friendship, since only a true friend will know the password. -
Lester and Adam are Captured Again!
When they are about to start their path to Kentucky through the mountains Lester and Adam were recaptured in chains and they were back to their original state from before and this event is important because Lester and Adam are characters that risked their lives for Julilly and Liza and now both Julilly and Liza are left on the their own to continue their track through the mountains. -
The German Village
The girls arrive to a German village where they recieved a nice welcome and are hidden from the slave catchers. In addition, Julilly and Liza were provided with food, clothing, and a shelter which they desperately wanted. This event is significant for the reason that the German village showed friendship and helped bot hJulilly and Liza along their path in the story. -
Jeb Henson
Julily and Liza encountered an additional conductor named Jeb Henson who assisted them to recover and to aid them by providing them with food, shelter, as well as clothing. This is significant because the mood starts from tense and it becomes light as the story goes on. -
The Slave Catchers Return!
The Slave catchers appeared at the hideout nevertheless they were influenced that Jeb Henson wasn’t hiding any slaves and helping them arrive to Canada. This is imperative as he is taking numerous amounts of risks towards his life just to help and hide Julily and Liza. -
Levi Coffin
The three of them take a boat and travel starting from Ohio River to Cincinnati where the President of the Underground Railway lives. That man is no other than Levi Coffin who acquires them in and who takes care of them like if they were his own children by providing them with food and shelter. This is important because this shows the theme friendship since Levi Coffin is ready to take any risk in order to help Julilly and Liza arrive to Canada successfully. -
The Journey to Cleveland!
When both Julilly and Liza are inside a train which is heading towards Cleveland, Alexander Ross flees and escapes from jail to facilitate Julilly and Liza and to make sure their journey is in safe hands and it leads them to a boat called “Mayflower”. This event is essential for the reason that Alexander Ross goes through a great amount of risks just to help Julilly and Liza arrive to Canada perfectly. -
The Arrival to Canada!
The captain of the “Mayflower” boat brings them beyond Lake Erie in the direction of Canada where they will be free once they arrive there. This is significant because this event is the climax of the story for the reason that they arrive to Canada. -
The Arrival in Canada
Julilly and Liza finally arrive to Canada and Julily finds her mother and Lester there too.
