    European Exploration

    -Europeans came looking for water routs to Asia.
    -They claimed land in north America on behalf of European rulers.
    -They thought that they possessed the right to control trades there ,even though the aboriginals were already there for thousands of years.

    French Colonial Rule

    -The french claimed land(later to become Canada)
    -They settled along the St.Lawrence river,most people were involved in fur trades and fishing.
    -At this time the seigniorial system was in effect.
  • Formation of the HBC

    -HBC -Hudson's Bay Company
    -The British claimed land(They called it Rupert's Land)and the HBC controlled it from 1670 to 1879.
    -After that they sold interests to Canada.

    Struggle for control

    -The French and British fought for the control of fur trades.
    -They also fought for political power(to strengthen economic hold)
    -Alot of human relocation was preformed during this time.

    War of 1812

    -USA and Great Britain were at war.
    -There were 3 long lasting effects on Canada:
    -American immigration to British North America was discouraged and immigration from Great Britain was encouraged.
    -Canada began to feel pride.
    -The British assimilated the natives after the war.
    -Fur trade was still continuous at this time.

    The Great Migration

    -Many British citzens came to Canada.
    -However he largest percentage of them were Irish.
    -The settled in upper Canada and east of south St. Lawrence.
  • Rebellions

    -Rebels broke out against lower Canada's government in 1837
    -The British quickly ended it.
    -This resulted in the leaders of the rebellion to escape to USA
    -William Mackenzie and his supporters tried to over throw the upper Canadian government.
    -But the were dispersed
    -This ended the rebellion.
