    Major-General Joseph Saidu Momoh becomes president.

  • Civil War begins.

    Civil War begins. Former army corporal Foday Sankoh and his Revolutionary United Front (RUF) begin campaign against President Momoh, capturing towns on border with Liberia.

  • Momoh is thrown-out.

    Valentine strasser throws Momoh out due to frustration by failure to deal with rebels.

  • Strasser is thrown out.

    Strasser thrown out in military coup led by his defence minister.

  • Ahmad Tejan Kabbah elected president.

    Ahmad Tejan Kabbah elected president in February, signs peace accord with Sankoh's rebels in November.

    Peace deal unravels. President Kabbah deposed by army in May.

  • Rebels are driven out of Freetown.

    Nigerian-led West African intervention drive rebels out of Freetown.

  • Kabbah Returns to Freetown.

    Kabbah returns to Freetown amid scenes of public rejoicing.

  • Rebels attempt in taking Freetown.

    Rebels capture part of Freetown but are driven back a few weeks later leaving thousand dead and wounded.
