Summer vacation begins
Classes in Monument ended on the last Friday of June for summer vacation. For Jason Dorrant summer officially began on the first Monday after the last Friday in June. -
Alicia Bartlett 's body is found
The seven-year-old of Alicia Bartlett was found between the trunks of two overlapping maple trees, only five hundred yards from her home. Her body was discovered by at dusk during the second search of the area by a volunteer who spotted a white sandal sticking out of a pile of debris. -
Jason can not believe that Alicia is dead.
Jason found it hard to believe that Alicia was dead. His chin began to wobble and his eyes filled with tears. He did not want to cry. Jason recalled when he spent the day in the principal office all alone for punching Bobo Kelton.This is when he vowed never to cry again. Bobo pushed Jason from behind, and Jason turned around & pushed Bobo with both hands.Then he socked him cross the cheek bone."What did you do that for?'', whined Bobo. -
Braxton came to Jason house and asked him some questions.
The last person to see Alicia Bartlett alive? Except for the murderer, of course, Dectective Braxton quickly added. Jason felt himself recoil." What time did you leave Alicia's?'' the dectective asked. "Did Alicia seem upset about something?" Jason thought a moment "Well, she was having trouble with the jigsaw puzzle." Did Alicia seem upset about anything other than the puzzle?" "Well Brad was teasing her but he was always teasing her about something, and so did everyone else . -
Jason remembering a day at the pool.
Jason closed his eyes, remembering how he and Alicia had worked on the puzzle together trying to ignore the antics around the pool. Alicia finally hit her stride and started putting the puzzle together. -
Alicia and Brad having it out.
Brad and friends abandoned the pool. They toweled themselves off in the sun. Brad wandered over to the patio, and stood silhouetted against the sun. " What would happen , Alicia,if I accidently tripped and knocked over that card table over?" stressing the word accidently.Alicia gave him a withering look ."Haven't you done enough damage today already?"She said in a voice cold as an icicle, not at all in a kid sister voice. -
What Jason actually found.
Instead, Jason found himself in a small cubicle occupied by a gray-haired man in a white shirt and blue tie sitting at a desk behind a plate-glass window. The place was so quiet that Jason could hear the humming of the air conditioner. -
Alvin Dark and Braxton talk aboutTrent
Alvin Dark asked : " What do you have?"
"A gut feeling", answered Braxton.
"Gut feelings do not hold up in front of grand juries", Replied Dark.
"What we need is a confession,"Braxton said tentatively. Time for big move, Braxton thought, and here goes.
" There is an interrogator by the name trent. He is part of a new breed. This man is uncanny.," expained Braxton .
" All right then make the call ," answered Dark -
Trent recieves the call from Braxton
Trent recieved the call from Braxton moments after obtaining a confession from Adolph Califer. Trent asked Braxton for details . Braxton lays the senario down . Trent replies by saying fax me the details. -
Jason arrives at the police station.
Jason was surprised when he entered the police headquarters to find a normal place that could have been any business office in Monument. He'd anticipated telephones to be ringing wildly,a bank of monitors showing all kinds of activity, police officers coming and going, and cigar-smoking detectives in plain clothes hunched over their desks,like on television or in the movies. -
Braxton shows trent the interrogation room
The office to which Braxton led him was perfect. Small and cluttered and claustrophobic. No windows .A light coming harshly and directly from a ceiling bulb. No air-conditioning either.one chair was hiher than the other ; just hoe trent liked it. -
Jason and Trent meet for the first time.
The boy. thin, black hair, no biten fingernail. All indications. The interrogations starts . Simple questions just to warm up .To earn Jason trust. -
Jason leaves
Jason realizes that he can up and leave. This is volunteer after all . Right? JAson pushed his chair back , and winced at the scraping of the chair against the wood floor. -
Trent discovers that Jason has left
The office was empty, the boy gone. Trent walks into a empty room .Jason must have left through the rear of the building. Why would he flee if he were innocent ? trent catches up to Jason and convinces him to stay and finish -
Trent finds out that Jason is innocent
Trent realizs that Jason is naive and innocent. He also realizes that he can make Jason say anything . He starts off by saying that Jason is in denial . Then within five minutes he got Jason to utter the words he need him to say. Those words the whole thing recorded on tape. -
The right killer is found.
Trent steps out of the office leaving Jason behind. Sarah downes comes down the hall. Trent hands her the tape and says it is all right here. " You got him to confess .," stated Sarah. She explains how one of Brad's friends alibai didn't hold and that Jason is innocent.
