    Portuguese begin exploring Africa

    Under the commands of Prince Henry the Navigator, Portuguese fleets traveled southward along the western coast of Africa where they discovered gold.
  • Jan 27, 1486

    Bartholomeu Dias rounds tip of Africa

    King John II appointed Bartholomeu Dias to sail around the southernmost tip of Africa to make contact with a Christian ruler.
  • Jan 27, 1492

    Columbus Reaches West Indies

    Believing that he had reached Asia, he reached all the major Caribbean islands and Honduras in Central America. He named these the Indies.
  • Jan 27, 1494

    Treaty of Tordesillas Signed

    Because Spain and Portugal were afraid others might get to the newly discovered territories first, they created this treaty. It called for a line of demarcation extending from north to south throught the Atlantic Ocean and the easternmost part of the South American continent.

    Vasco da Gama sails across Indian Ocean to India

    He traveled around the cape and across the Indian Ocean to the coast of India. He arrived at the port of Calicut where he took on a cargo of spices. Later returning to Portugal, he made a profit of several thousand percent.

    Pedro Cabral lands in South America

    Pedro was sent on an expedition to India. He sighted Brazil claiming it was Portugal. He was the first European to see Brazil.
  • Jan 27, 1509

    Albuquerque finds Melaka

    Albuquerque sailed into Melaka. This would destroy Arab control of the spice trade and provide the Portuguese with a way station on the route to the Spice Islands.
  • Jan 27, 1518

    First enslaved Africans taken from Africa to the New World & when slavery was abolished in United States

    A Spanish ship brought the first enslaved Africans from Africa to the Americas. Then they became part of the Triangular trade. Slavery continued in the U.S. until the Civil War in the 1860's.
  • Jan 27, 1519

    Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigates the world

    He started in 1519 along the coast of South America in order to find a sea passage through America. He passed through a waterway into the Pacific Ocean. He reached the Phillipines but he was killed by the native tribes there.
  • Jan 27, 1520

    Aztecs defeated by the Spanish

    Spanish had a great advantage fighting the Aztec because of their advanced weapons. They took Montezuma hostage and started to ransack the city. Many Aztec died from the European diseases the Spanish brought over.

    Spain rules Mexico (beginning and ending years)

    Called, "New Spain", it was established after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.
  • Jan 27, 1530

    Incas defeated by the Spanish

    Francisco Pizarro landed on the Pacific coast of South America with a total of 180 men with weapons the Inca had never seen. Just like the Aztec, the Inca died from European diseases to which they had no immunity to.
  • Jan 27, 1555

    Peace of Augsburg

    The end to religious warfare created in Germany. This agreement formally accepted the division of Christianity in Germany. This meant the German states were now able to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism.
  • England sails to India

    This was the Dutch East India Company. It was created when the States-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia.
  • England rules Canada (beginning and ending years)

    England ruled Canada from the year 1605 until British rule in 1763.
  • England rules United States (beginning and ending years

    Great Britain ruled over the colonies starting in 1607 until 1776 when they declared their independence.
  • Henry Hudson discovers Hudson Bay

    Hudson found a body of water that he thought was the Pacific Ocean. It turned out to be the Hudson Bay.
  • Dutch sail to India

    This was when Henry Hudson was hired by the Dutch East India Company and found the Hudson River.
  • Dutch establish settlements on North America

    This was the voyage of Henry Hudson who tried to find a northeast passage to China above Norway.
  • English take New Netherland

    English took over New Netherland in the year 1664.
  • French colonize Canada and Louisiana

    The French held Canada and Louisiana until the Treaty of Paris was signed. This awarded French holdings to Great Britain and Spain.
