    Peter Minuit Comes to New Netherland
    A Swedish admiral was leading an expedition to North America. Peter Minuit was elected as the leader of the expedition. They came to the Delaware Bay which was occupied by the Dutch, so they kept going further. They went further inland and settled at present-day Wilmington, Delaware. He named the land New Sweden.In a couple years, over 600 Swedes had come to New Netherland. Peter Minuit was voted as governor because he had the most knowledge of the area.

    The governor (Johan Printz) of New Sweden makes a big mistake. He ends the friendly relationship between the Swedes and Dutch by building three forts. He seized a Dutch settlement. The Dutch acted quickly and brought soldiers. The Swedes were outnumbered and surrendered peacefully. They were allowed to stay in their settlement after an oath of loyalty to the Dutch.

    England wanted to take back their earlier claims on the territory that the Dutch occupied. They landed in New Amsterdam (New York City) with many troops. The Dutch didn't have a choice but to surrender because no citizens wanted to fight. So England took over parts of present-day Pennsylvania and New York.

    The English Quakers (religious group in England) were highly persecuted. To solve this problem, William Penn purchased land from the king of England for all English Quakers to find safety from persecution.

    William Penn's sons were less interested than their father in cultivating a friendship with the Lenni Lenape. They lied to the Lenape, telling them that their ancestors had made an agreement to give them land from a day-and-a-half's walk. Thomas Penn (William Penn's Son) hired the two fastest runners in the province. In the end they covered over 1,200 sq. miles of land.

    Both the English and French claimed to own the Ohio region and would not give it up. French attacked English trading posts and built a fort and defended it. The French were winning until British soldiers came and took over their main forts. The French had Native Americans on their side, but they still lost.

    Many Native American tribes around the Ohio Region where the French and Indian war was fought were not happy with the British taking over and their war policies. They fought back and destroyed many forts and killed many people. The British signed a treaty to divide the land and fix the war policy.

    The First Continental Congress was a convention of delegates from twelve of the thirteen North American colonies that met at Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia. The Congress met briefly to consider options to boycott british trade and compromises. Britain appealed their request, which then led to the 2nd continental congress.

    In 1776 Pennsylvania enacted its first state constitution in direct response to the Declaration of Independence and the instructions of the Second Continental Congress to the colonies to reject British rule. It was based on giving a broad range of rights to the people and putting authority in their hands. It was replaced in 1790.

    Washington Moved to valley forge to get closer and spy on the British Army in Philadelphia. There were shortages of everything. The american army was freezing and starving, while the British were filling themselves up. A Prussian military leader came and trained the army. There were many who left or died, but the army was stronger in the end.

    U.S Constit. Adopted John Fitch invents steamboat
    John Fitch demonstrated the first successful steamboat, launching a forty-five-foot craft on the Delaware River in the presence of delegates from the Constitutional Convention. He went on to build a larger steamboat which carried passengers and freight between Philadelphia and Burlington, New Jersey.
