10 Significant Literacy Moments

  • First Words

    I was just around 1 year old when I said my first words. I don't remember this, but it is a very important thing for an infant to say their first words.
  • First D.E.A.R Day

    Sometime in Febuary, in first grade I experienced my first Drop Everything And Read experience. I loved it some much! Those 20-30 minutes is what I looked forward to everyday.
  • Read my first Junie B Jones book

    I remember being able to read my very first Junie B Jones book by the end of 1st grade. It was so excited to be able to look at, and understand words without having to refer to a picture.
  • Taking my first typing class

    When I was in 3rd grade we started using a generic computer program that taught students how to type on a key board the correct way.
  • First Summer Book Report

    The summer going into 5th grade was the first year my mom made me read a book and write a short report about it. I had all summer to do it, and I loved reading, but knowing that I had to do "homework" over summer break, made me despise reading.
  • Simulated Congressional Hearing

    In May of my 5th grade year the entire grade participated in a SCH where people from around the community came to our school to hear us, in groups, make arguments or agree with acts, events, and documents created during a specific historical period. This was my first experience with public speaking.

    At the end of 5th grade we learned out to write outlines and find supporting details in order to write our first research papers.
  • Popcorn Reading

    I'm not sure if the beggining of 6th grade was my first expeirence with Popcorn reading, but it's definetly the first one I remember being called on to read and not knowing about half of the words that where in the book. It was one of the most embaressing moments for me.
  • Junior Interviews

    During the final months of my junior year we were preparing for junior interview day. I had to learn how to speak in a professional manner, portray myself as someone right for any specific job, and type up a resume.
