1.3 Learning Assessment

  • Health related decision that I have made

A health related decision I have made was getting my wisdom teeth out.
  • Short-Term Impact

A short term impact of this decision is pain and potential complications with surgery. Like stated in the textbook, "They pay attention to today's risks, not so much tomorrow's, and very little to those they'll face 10 years from now" (Page 9). Focusing on pain and potential complications from having teeth removed is short term, but the long terms risks might outweigh them. It is important to weigh the short and long term risks in order to make a healthy decision.
  • Long Term Impact

A long term impact of getting wisdom teeth removed is gum disease, bone loss, and bacterial infection. The textbook states, "We must ask ourselves, at least for major decisions like health, if we've missed some long-terms gains or risks because of how our brains typically operate" (Page 9).
  • Defense of Health Choice

It was obvious that getting teeth removed earlier rather than later was inherently safer than waiting. The possible outcomes of no removal was too risky and the healthy decision is to get wisdom teeth removed as soon as possible to prevent future health problems. "Your choices, no matter how big r small, have an impact on who you are and who you will become" (Page 8).
