Ann Burden is alone in the valley after her family left to explore outside of it.

Ann sees the smoke of someone approaching the valley, and she moves into a secret cave to protect herself.

The stranger in the valley is now staying at Ann's house.

The stanger jumps into Burden Creek and gets radiation posioning. Ann then has to take care of him to keep him from dying, and she discovers that his name is John Loomis.

After nearly dying, Loomis speaks again on June 8 and says Ann’s companionship saved him. But during his recovery over the next two weeks, Ann worries when he plans for their future in the valley

Mr. Loomis says they must start a colony together, Ann is uneasy though despite her similar hoopes earlier on.

Mr. Loomis sneaks into Ann's room while she is sleeping, and she awakes to hear him breathing nearby, she lies quitely and pretneds to be asleep but when he tries to get in bed with her she fights him off, and returns to her cave to stay.

Ann taks to Mr. Loomis and suggets a compromise, of sharing the farm work while both living separate lives.

Mr. Loomis denies Ann access to the tractor, and tells her that she must forgo many things if she continues her stupidity.

Mr. Loomis shoots Ann in the ankle, so he could slow her down. She ascapes into the wilderness and has to try to nurnse her bullet wound.

Ann has a dream that there is another valley somewhere out in the deadness, and there are children in it. She decides that she needs to find this valley and those children.

Ann escapes through the gap in the valley, with the suit and the wagon that Mr.Loomis arrived with

Ann is out in the deadness searching for the children in her dreams.
