Elton was only sixteen when WWI started in 1914. At this time the United States was not involved in the war, but that couldn't keep Elton from joining the war, or trying, he joined the Third Canadian Contingent with several of his friends. He went through enlistment, and was taken out of school to work full time.

In April of 1917 Elton decided that it was time for him to take part in the war to end all wars. At just 19, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and completed basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina.

After enlisting and completing his training, Elton was sent over to Europe and eventually became a battalion runner for the 67th Co. 1st Battalion 5th Marine Regiment.

Still as a runner, Elton served in many battles, the Battle of Belleau Wood being one, lasting nearly a month

After his service, Elton was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps.

After serving his country, Elton came home and led a long peacfull life, later dying in Norwalk, Ohio.
