    Hitler
    In WWI, Hitler moved to Germany. He volunteered and fought in the military for Germany. He gained lots of military experiences. Hitler was a strong fighter. He won many metals and got wounded. While fighting in the war, he gained lots of training that later helped him.
  • Assassination of Franz

    Assassination of Franz
    WWI all began because of the assassination of the Archduke. Gavrilo Princip killed the Archduke along with his pregnant wife. Austria took all the anger on Serbia, which caused the beginning of the war. Austria declares war on Serbia. Princip killed the archduke because he was the future emperor.

    Germany invades Belgium
    Germany starts to invade Belgium on August 3rd. Germany government wrote to Belgium government asking to use the right of free passage across Belgium. Germany divided Belgium into three sections. Germans marched all around Belgium and got people frightened. They did this for there troops and so they could invade France and get to Paris.

    Walter Botts was a radio man. He wanted to be a pilot in the war. His father talked him into not be a pilot due to all of the planes. At this time, the planes would crash very easily.

    The Battle of Marne started in September 5, 1914. It was an allied war against Germany. France, The UK, and The French Third Republic all wanted Germany Army to retreat back where they came from. This battle started because Germany invaded Belgium. The battle then ended after seven days, September 12th.

    WWI had two sides of the war, the Entente Power and the Central Power. Britain had the largest navy than any other country. The Kaiser did not like that Britain had a larger navy than him. He increased his navy and built many warships. This created lots of tension and competition for Britain and Germany.

    World War I was the first war to use gas warfare. Gas warfare is chemical warfare.

    The Preparedness Movement was a campaign that was led by Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt. This campaign was trying to get the military strong. Walter Botts was in this campaign to start the war. Walter Botts was also known as Uncle Sam, he was the propaganda poster.
  • Trench Warfare

    In WWI, trench warfare was a big part of the war. Soldiers made trenches and fought the war in tiny deep holes. They were stuck at the bottom of ditches fighting for their lives. These trenches were rat-infested ditches. When they had no food, they ate rats. The trenches also flooded which caused feet to rot.

    Walter Botts is also known as Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam was a propaganda poster to get people to fight for the military. He was in the Army and was ranked a private. He was selected to be the model of Uncle Sam.

    The United States enters the war because of Germany. Germany decided to keep the policy of submarine warfare, then the Zimmerman Telegraph gave Germany the idea to get Mexico into the war. They sent Mexico an offer to join the war to infuriated American, trying to convince the US to enter the war and be allies.

    Uncle Sam was a recruitment poster to let people know they need people for the war. The phrase " I WANT YOU" made viewers feel obligated to go and fight. Artist James Flagg, who painted the poster and in 1917 used a modified of his own face. The poster then later became the most famous propaganda poster today.

    The Sedition Act is a law that made speaking out against the law illegal. This act decided that the US could participate in the war. It let the press to print, speak, print, write,or publish anything about speaking against the war. Before this law, people had to keep quiet about the war.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    The Treaty of Versailles is a peace treaty to end the war. It ended all fighting of WWI. It was signed June 28th. The war lasted 5 years and the treaty was signed on the day the Archduke was assassinated. The treaty was signed ten miles outside of Paris.

    After Walter Botts died, everyone knew about how he was Uncle Sam. Walter didn't want anyone to know about him being Uncle Sam. Walter Botts did not like talking about the war, so he kept it a secret. Walter Botts died July 31st and he is well known for his posters.
