The First Battle of The Somme was a bloody trench warfare with over 1.2 million casualties. Poison gas, rifles, machine guns, tanks, and mines were all used during this 3 year battle. The British army fired shots at German trenches and went out of their trenches to advance on the German army. The area between the trenches was called "no mans land."
