    The First Battle of Marne was the first battle of WW1. Germany hoped to knock out France before they went after Russia. The Germans ended up retreating. Germany did not defeat the French. Britain also had complications at the Marne.

    The Battle of Gallipoli allowed allied ships to pass through the Dardanelles. The goal was to knock out Ottoman Turkey out of the war. The plan was based on thinking they would be easy to overcome, they were not. Trench warfare very quickly took over.

    The battle of Verdun was the longest battle in WW1. Germany attacked the French town Verdun. The French took back their land later that fall. They also ended up winning the battle. The Germans lost over 430,000 men.

    The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle in WW1. Germany was hoping to weaken Royal Navy. Jutland involved 250 ships and 100,000 men. None of the victories were achieved as they were hoped for.

    The Battle of The Somme was the French and British teaming up to battle the Germans. They fought over the Western Front. This battle was much like the battle of Verdun. More than one million men from both sides were killed. Making that day, the bloodiest day in Britain's military history.

    Congress gave $250 million for arms appropriations bill intended to prepare the U.S. for the war. The U.S. entering the war was significant. They brought more fire power and obviously more soldiers.

    Britain had steady casualties at this battle. This battle symbolizes the horrors from the western front. Ypres was a key battle ground throughout the entire war. The original attack failed because of the rain. The drainage of the battle field also failed making it difficult to move.

    Russia reached armistice before a lot of countries. They reached in December of 1917. They reached armistice with Germany. They reached a major obstacle in their plan. The pressed France and Britain to open peace negotiations.

    This battle represented Germany gambling the Western Front. Operation 'Michael' was the first offence. The Germans ambushed the British with artillery, gas, smoke, and infantry.

    Lloyd Brown lied about his age to get into WW1. He was only 16; you're supposed to be 18. He said that it was 'patriotic'. He also said that it made the girls crazy. Him lying about his age caused his age to be wrong with the government for the rest of his life. He stayed in the military until 1925.

    This battle started the Hundred Days campaign. This was a four month allied success. The British Expeditionary Force combined scientific artillery methods and flexible infantry firepower with airplanes and tanks.

    This battle combined artillery, infantry, cavalry, armored vehicles, and aircraft successfully. The battle was also the start of important Allied victories that ended in the result of the Ottoman Turkish empire collapsing and later leaving the war.

    Turkey signed a treaty with the allies in October of 1918. Turkey had some really heavy losses during the war. Turkey was part of the Ottoman Empire. More than 800,000 Turks died.
