On june 28th 1914 Archduke Franz Fredinand of Austria, heir to the throne, and his wife, Sophie Duchess of Hohenberg, were shot dead in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, one of the group of six assassins. The campaign began with a failed naval attack by britsh and french ships on the Dardanelles straits in Febuary-March 1915.
