    Planes in WW1
    Planes were still a very new technology during WW1. Planes were often used for reconnaissance mission. Planes allowed the allies to exploit weak spots in the German lines. A machine gun was successfully mounted on to a plane in 1912 but had some issues. The French plane provide a solution. It had deflector wedges that prevented bullets from hitting the propeller.

    The Beginning
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Hungary was assassinated by a member of the black hand in Serbia on June 28 1914. Serbia was heavily blamed by Hungary. An Alliance was built between Serbia and Russia. Germany and Hungary built an alliance. The 4 countries started to build there armies up. On July 28 1914 Hungary declared war on Serbia.

    The Schlieffen plan
    Germany invaded Belgium to get to France. Germany used siege cannons and other powerful weaponry. The city of liege was captured by August 15 1914. Germans shot and killed many civilians.

    Battle of the Marne
    French and British forces confronted the invading German forces. Britain and France drove Germany back. This meant the end of German plans for a quick victory in France. Both sides constructed trenches. This resulted in stalemate.

    The Invention of the Gas Mask
    The Allied forces were not prepared for Germany to use gas as a weapon. The Allied forces suffered many casualties to mustard gas. The first gas mask was invented in 1915 and was originally used for fire fighting but was modified to protect against poison gas. Poison gas was still very dangerous and harmful but the gas mask did make a difference and saved lives.

    Germany began developing chemical weapons in October 1914. Germany experimented with different types of gas like tear gas, xylyl bromide, and chlorine. Mustard gas, introduced by the Germans in 1917, blistered the skin, eyes, and lungs. Britain and the U.S also experimented with poison gas.

    Arnold and other soldiers were crammed in a train for 3 days with limited food and no bathrooms on their way to France.
  • Family Reunion

    Family Reunion
    Arnold Hoke was reunited with his brother who was also fighting in the war. His brother was in a village about 10 miles away, so he walked miles to see his brother and got lost. He saw a soldier in the distance and thought that he might be able to give him directions. Once he approached the man he realized it was his brother. His brother was trying to walk to his village and also got lost.

    The U.S Enters The War
    The U.S remained neutral for most of the war. It wasn ́t until April 2 1917 that we joined. In may 1915 a British boat with hundreds of Americans aboard was sunk. This made the U.S mad. Then the U.S intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico saying that if Mexico joined Germany they would give them their land back that we took. This made the U.S even more mad. On April 2, 1917 Woodrow Wilson the U.S President declared war.
  • The Red Cross

    The Red Cross
    In the beginning of the war, the Red Cross was very small. When the U.S went to war on April 6 1917 the Red Cross began to rapidly grow. By the end of the ⅓ of U.S citizens were either a donor to the Red Cross or a volunteer. More than 8 million adults volunteered for the Red cross. The Red Cross supplied food and comfort items to POW's.

    Dogs in WW1
    Dogs in trenches provided companionship and comfort for soldiers during ww1. Dogs were used to relay messages. The Red Cross used dogs to find wounded soldiers. By 1918 Germany had employed 30,000 dogs
  • The End

    The End
    On July 5 1918 German troops attacked American and French Forces. The allies pushed German forces back and launched a counterattack. The allies were able to regain much of France and Belgium. Due to lack of resources on the battlefield Germany and Hungary were forced to surrender, ending the war on November 11 1918.
