  • Franz Ferdinand

    Franz Ferdinand and his wife are killed by Gavrilo Princip. The Austrian government suspects that Serbia is responsible. this was in the end one of the main causes of the war because they suspected Serbia for the killing and Franz Ferdinand was in line to rule Austria. this angered the Austrian government so they declared war and it snowballed into something much bigger.

    On this date Austria declares war on Serbia for assassinating Franz Ferdinand. He was supposed to become the ruler of Austria so they took his assignation as a threat to the country . They ended up going to war. this was snowballed into something way bigger in the end due to all the allies that both countries had.
  • Germany invades Beljum

    On 2 August 1914 the Germany government wrote to the Belgian government demanding the right of free passage through Belgium. they wanted the rights to this for there troops so that they could invade France and reach Paris the easiest way possible. Beljum then clearly refused to grant them this. so Gerrmany invaded to basically take what they wanted because it was not given to them.

    Germany invades Paris from planes. this attack had little military value so in other words Germany didn't gain very much if anything from this attack. this attack was mainly to terrorize and scare the citizens of France.

    on this day the Lusitania an British passenger ship was sunk by German u-boats. the ship was suspected of transporting military supplies. the ship was on route from New York to Liverpool, England. 1100 of the 1900 people on board died and 120 of them were Americans.

    After the March 24 sinking of the passenger ship, Sussex, Woodrow Wilson again threatened breaking off relations with Germany. To avert the threat of America entering the war on the side of the Allies, the Germans call off their campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare.

    Intercepted by the British intelligence service weeks before, the United States is alerted about the Zimmerman Telegram by Britain. German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman promises the return of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona to Mexico as reward for them to join the war and help them take down America.

    The United States of America enters the first world war, declaring was on the central powers. more than two million U.S soldiers fought in the battlefields of France.

    The day after an overwhelming majority in the Senate votes for war, President Wilson signs the declaration. The United States quickly put the entire military on the way to war. Millions of men were inducted into the armed forces over the next two years and given basic combat training.
  • Eugene Curtin

    Eugene wrote a letter home to his mother and sisters when he arrived in Washington D.C. This was while he was being shipped over seas. The letter does not say where exactly he is going but I know he is going to France, Germany, or Belgium.

    Eugene has spent a month in the war now. He is yet to get any letters from his family but hes not worried about it because he knows they have been writing him it just takes a while for it to get there. This letter was to his uncle and told of his 21 day journey from America to France. He wrote about how delightful the journey was because they got there smoothly and safely because they were well protected and nothing bad happend on there way.

    In this letter to his mother Eugene had said that they went to Paris for five days and are back at the war. He explained how nice it was to be away from the war and stress free even though it wasn't for long. He tells about his journeys to and from a bunch of the near cities and towns that they visit. This letter tells every will about the war and his contribution to it.

    "World War One ended at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in 1918. Germany signed an armistice that had been prepared by Britain and France." Germany and its allies thought that they were in for a easy fast win towards the end of the was so they launched a plan to push the allied powers back and win the was but this plan backfired when Britain and France counter attacked and won. Germany realized there was no possible was for them to win and ended the war.
  • Dear mother

    In this Eugene is writing to his mother about the war. In the beginning he sounds angry that he hasn't gotten any mail from his family even though he understands that it takes a long time to get to him. He speaks of how good they are doing in the war pushing everyone back and blowing up the valleys. He says that he thinks the war will end soon if things keep going the way they are which is true.
