    Large numbers of women were recruited into jobs vacated by men who had gone to fight in the war. They needed money to provide for their children while the men were in the war. Woman had lower wages than men during this time because they were in a need to work for money. This also caused the 19th amendment to be made which granted women the right to vote and prohibited any United States citizen to be denied the right to vote based on sex.

    Trench warfare is used when the superior firepower makes the other forces to cut off mobility and dig into the ground. They begin by digging holes and then connect the holes to make it walkable. They could be deep enough to cover over a soldier's head. This caused the U.S to begin using new technology to make new weapons which caused the arms race.

    Sinking of Lusitania
    Germany engaged in submarine warfare against the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The ship was identified and torpedoed by the German U-boat, U-20 and it sank in 18 minutes. 1,900 passengers and crew members were on board and more than 1,100 died. This included over 120 Americans. Almost two years would pass before the United States entered World War I. The sinking of the Lusitania played a significant role in turning public opinion against Germany, in the United States and abroad.

    It forbade the use of "disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language" about the United States government, its flag, or its armed forces or that caused others to view the American government or its institutions with contempt. This violated the 1st amendment because it kept people from speaking their mind.

    The Zimmerman note was a secret diplomatic communication issued from the German Foreign Office in January 1917. This proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico because of the United States entering World War I against Germany. This caused the United States to end diplomatic relations with Germany and resulted in U-boat attacks on American ships. It effected the public opinion against Germany and it spread democracy throughout.

    Schenck v. United States was the first of the Supreme Court Cases defining the modern understanding of the First Amendment. They came to the conclusion that curtain words spoken or printed represented to society a “clear and present danger.” The Espionage and Sedition Acts targeted socialists and labor leaders. They were targeted because they were demanding better conditions for workers.

    The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than WW1. Around 20 to 40 million people died because of the Spanish flu. It has been the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history.

    The Fourteen Points speech was a statement given to Congress on January 8, 1918. President Woodrow Wilson declared that WW1 was being fought for a moral cause and calling for peace in Europe. This became the base of the peace program. The league of Nations was a new style of international relations based on the cooperation of all of the nations of the world. The League was mainly in Switzerland,because it was neutral location.

    The treaty of Versailles was an international peace treaty that ended WW1. It has 15 parts and 440 articles which reassigned German boundaries and assigned liability for reparations. This caused Germany to lose WW1. Germany had to pay to repair all the damage of the war as a reparation.
