the passenger ship Lusitania was headed to England. the germans thought it was carrying weapons and ammunition, so a German U-boat (submarine) fired a torpedo right at the Lusitania. the torpedo made contact and the Lusitania sunk. 1,100 people died including 120 Americans.

Arthur Zimmermman sent a telegram to Mexico, the telegram asked if Mexico wanted to become allies. Germany promised land to Mexico (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, if they won the war) Britan intercepted the telegram and sent It to the U.S.

This act gave President Wilson the power to draft soldier to serve in WWI. Before the draft the US had about 100,000 volunteer soldiers. After the draft 10 million men registered and 2.4 million of them of served in the war. The drafted proved to be significant throughout the war as it provided fresh troops for the allied powers.
