    July 1, 1867, Canada became its own country, separating, from Great Britain. Our first Prime Minister was Sir John A. Macdonald who signed the British North American Act (BNA) that declared Canada an independent nation. The BNA act was the set of Laws in place before constitution.

    First Battle of Ypres
    The german and western allies tryied to secure the town from the enemy. One of the reasons for this battle were the British trying to take over the English Channel Ports. The French strategy was to stop the German forces from coming around the side and taking over. Both sides were making offensive moves until the Germans made there big attack in mid-October! which put the opposing side in-to defense mode and limited counter attacks. The battle lasted 34 days and the Allies won.

    On April 9th 1917, the Battle of Vimy Ridge began and it would last for four days. The battle was between the Germans and The Canadian. The Germans were on top of the “hill” and The Canadians had to climb up it. This gave the Germans the advantage of shooting us from above. There were over 10 000 Canadian Casualties, Vimy Ridge was the first allied victory of the First World War. More then 15 000 move soldiers moved in the first wave of attack.     During World War I as the men went to fight for there country someone needed to take care of the life at home, The women stayed at home worked in factories and provided for there familyies while the men where away, They wereat home building War weapons for the men! some women were kniting socks and other clothing! The high demand for socks was because in the trenches it was soaking wet and it would cause trench foot which is totally disgustuing and the new socks would sorta keep there feet warm!

    The end of World War I was November 11th 1918 when France, The United Kingdom, Italy, the United States, and others nations including Japan, Belgium, Australia, Canada Accepted the surrender of Germany, Austria - Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, and the other Central Powers. At the end of WWI there was a peace treat signed saying they would stop fighting. The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I was over 37 million.
