    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    On the 28th june 1914 Franz Ferdinand and his pregnant wife Sophie were on a parade in Sarajevo when members of the local black hand gang tried to kill the pair of them.This was unsucsessful until the car they were in took a wrong turn and the driver had to reverse into a back alley to turn around. At this point the car's engine stalled and the gears locked, giving one of the members Gavrilo Princip the opertunity to shoot at the car twice which resulted the deaths of both Franz and his wife.

    Womens involvement during the war
    The war affected women in a number of ways. For one thing, women were allowed to enter the work force. Many women went to work in factories and as trolley car drivers. Other women went to work in the fields. Many women became nurses. However, most women did not enjoy this line of work.
    During the war women became an important part of the work force. Since most of the men were off fighting, the women were needed to stay home and run things so that the ecomony would not completly fall apart.

    September 1915 saw the introducion of the tank which significantly helped Britain to win the war.Its main effect was to terrify the Germans but, although it could break down barbed wire and cross small trench systems, it wasn't very effective being able only to go at walking pace.This made it vulnerable to artillery and the casualty rates for the tank corp were quite high.Conditions inside were unbearable because of the heat and noise so it took tank crews 36 hours to recover from each day.

    The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles of the First World War; by the time fighting had come to an end in late autumn 1916 the forces involved had suffered more than 1 million casualties, making it one of the bloodiest military operations ever recorded.The aim was for the french and british forces to penatrate german teritory.At the end of the battle, British and French forces had penetrated a total of 6 miles (9.7 km) into German occupied territory.

    The armistice between the Allies and Germany was an agreement that ended the fighting in the First World War. It was signed in a railway carriage in Compiègne Forest on 11 November 1918 and marked a victory for the Allies and a complete defeat for Germany, although not technicaly a surrender.
