  • Triple Alliance

    Triple Alliance
    -Triple Alliance formed consisting of Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Germany.
    -Formed in case of any threat from greater power.
  • Schlieffen Plan

    Schlieffen Plan
    -Devised by Count Alfred von Schlieffen in December 1905.
    -The plan was to quickly defeat France and capture it and then turn on Russia because Russia was believed to be the slowest to gather an army.
    -The plan also said not to destroy or kill many French, but capture most of the French Army and make them surrender.
    -The plan was later amended,instead of going through the Netherlands, go through Belgium.
    -The Belgian army held Germany off and Germany declared war on Belgium.

    -France, Britain, and Russia were now allies if anything bad were to happen.
    -The Triple Entente was now a formidable counterweight to the Triple Allliance of Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Germany.

    -2500 Canadian women joined medical corps.
    -Many were killed by nearby battle.
    -Women over the age of 21 who were siblings, mothers, or spouses of those at war were allowed to vote on weither sll men should have to go to war or not.

    -The War Measures Act was an act of Canadian Parliament that gave the federal Cabinet emergency powers.
    -"For the security, defence, peace, order, and welfare of Canada."
    -Government had the power to strip Canadians of their civil rights.
  • Second Battle of Ypres

    -Fouight in Belgian city of Ypres.
    -Chlorine gas was used by the Germans.
    -6000 Canadians perished.
    -John MacRae wrote "In Flanders Feilds".
  • Battle of Somme

    -One of the largest battles of World War II
    -Douglas Haig led the attack which resulted in massive failure for the British, Canadian, and French.
    -24000 Canadians dead
    -1 million casualties, equal numbers on each side.
  • Vimy Ridge

    Canadian troops sent in to take control of Vimy Ridge, a key Germany territory.
    -Only 3500 Canadians died.
    -Success credited to malicious training and great tactics.
    -First big win for Canadians.

    -Canadians called upon to retake Passchendaele Ridge.
    -Horses and soldiers drowned in shell craters full of water.
    -15000 Canadian soldiers perished.
    -Allies were victorious.

    -Borden passed a law which made military service mandatory.
    -Women also had to be nurses or they could also participate in the war.
  • Halifax explosion

    -Explosion of French cargo ship full of tons of explosives.
    -Largest man made explosion until testing of atomic bombs in Trinity.

    -Destoyed all buildings within 2 square miles of the shore.
    -Death tolls are believed to be around 2000 people
  • Borden vs. Laurier Election

    -Said to be the most bitter election in Canadian history.
    -Mostly fought over conscription.
    -Laurier opposed conscription.
    -Borden won the election.
  • Operation Michael

    -German military operation to seize ports which recieved British supplies
    -Operation Michael failed because France called in large amounts of reinforcements.
  • Conscription Crisis

    -Prime Minister Borden realized that it took a lot more men than he thought to fight in the war so he introduced conscription.
    -French Canadians didn't want to go to war because they could not communicate with the English Batallions.
    -Conscription meant that workers earned less.

    -Includes president Woodrow Wilsons 14 points.
    -Associated with the treaty of versailles
  • League of Nations

    -First interational orginization thats purpose is maintaining world peace.
    -President Woodrow Wilson was very supportive of this idea and made it his main goal to maintain worldpeace and not have a repeat of World War I.
    -The league was created at the Paris Peace Conference along with the Treaty of Versailles.
  • Paris Peace Conference

    Paris Peace Conference
    -Meeting of the leaders following the Armistice.
    -Consisted of 32 countries not including Germany.
    -Included President Woodrow Wilson, Minister David Lloyd George, George Clemenceau, and Italian Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    -The final treaty that all countries in the war signed even Germany who was not invited to the Paris Peace Conference.
    -The treaty Blamed Germany for everything and forced them to pay billions in reperations and keep a limited army/navy as well as many other terms.
