For many people, the Battle of the Somme was the battle that symbolised the horrors of warfare in World War One as well as the futility of trench-based warfare. For months the French had been taking severe losses at Verdun. To relieve the French, the Allied High Command decided to attack the Germans to the north of Verdun therefore requiring the Germans to split their forces and allow the French some recuperation.

After the Battle of Somme had ended, Haig felt able to launch such an attack comfortably and relied upon his assumption that the German's would not try to stop them and allow their bases to fall. He assumed wrong.
