World War I Timeline

  • The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinard, and his wife

    This assassination impacted the start of the war because it gave the countries the push, to where they wanted to go to war. The couple was killed by a 19-year-old man part or a secret society known as the Black Hand.
  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

    The man who killed Archduke was from Serbia, so Austria-Hungary gave Serbia an ultimatum that was impossible for them to accomplish. Because Serbia can't do the things on the ultimatum, Austria declares war on them.

    Germany plans the Schlieffen Plan

    The Schlieffen Plan was Germany's plan on how to attack France and Russia. The plan was to go to France and defeat them, then quickly return to go and fight Russia.
  • First Battle of Marne

    The battle was the first part of Germany's plan to help them win the war. This battle had ruined the Schlieffen Plan for Germany because while they were using the plan the Allies found out. Then the Allies attacked on the eastern front while Germany was trying to fight on the western front.

    Battle of Limanowa

    The Russians had beat Austria a few times so they were into Austria's land. Then Austria got the help of Germany and was able to defeat Russia and gain their land back.

    Western Front starts using Trench Warfare

    Trench Warfare is when the soldiers build long trenches and they fight their enemies this way. The men who fought in trench warfare had to suffer its horrible living conditions because there wasn't freash food, there were animals crawling around, and it was hard to sleep.

    Battle of Verdun

    The Germans attacked the French and both sides lost more than 300,000 men.

    Battle of Somme

    While the Germans were fighting the French, the British came into help the French by attacking the Germans. By the end of the battle both sides had lost more then half a million men. In the end of the battle Germans gained four miles by Verdun and the British gained five miles in Somme.

    Germany starts to use unrestricted submarine warfare

    When Germany started to use unrestricted submarine warfare they sank a British boat that had ammunition and passengers. Some of the passengers were U.S. citizens and when they got killed in made the American population mad.
  • The United States joins the war

    When Germany started to use submarines to sink ships, they sunk a ship with American passengers on it. This made the Americans mad at Germany. After the British intercepted the telegram, the US decided that they had had enough and declared war on Germany.

    Russian Revolution

    When Russia had someone new in power, he wanted Russia out of the War. So he signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk to end the war between Germany and Russia.

    Second Battle of Marne

    The Allies wanted to attack Germany because they had many new soldiers ready to fight while Germany's soldiers were tiered and weak. They began to advance on Germany until the Central Powers started to crumble.
  • Armistice

    Germany decided to remove Kaiser from power and changed its government to a republic. Once this happened, someone from the new government signed an armistice that ended the World War.
  • The Treaty of Versailles was signed

    After the war the Allies had arguments about if Germany should pay for what it had done during the war. They came to a comprimise and the Treaty of Versailles was signed by Germany and the Allies.
