  • The Battle of Marne

    The Battle of Marne
    This was one of the first battles of World War 1. This war featured the first uses of radio intercepts and automotive transports of troops. They also used trench warfare. This war was fought in Paris, France.
  • Lusitania Down

    Lusitania Down
    A German U-Boat sinks the British ship called the Lusitania. The event killed and injured many people, and only infuriated the British further.
  • First Use of Tanks

    First Use of Tanks
    The british are the first to show up with tanks, at Delville Wood. These contraption were very good for breaking through barricades and clearing a path but failed to be an efficient weapon, as they were intended to be.
  • Where It All Started

    Mata Hari was romantically involved with a Russian captain. He was injured in war and became blind in his left eye. Because of this event Mata Hari was determined to make money to support him, so she agreed to become a spy for France.
  • Double Spy

    During this time, Mata Hari seduced her way in to German high command, received secrets and handed them over to the French. She would also supposedly tell the German officers fake information about the French to try to get more German secrets from them, and because of this was believed to be a double spy.

    Mata Hari was arrested by the French as a spy for Germany, Belgium, and many other undetermined countries.
  • The Zimmerman Telegraph

    The Zimmerman Telegraph
    German foreign secretary, Arthur Zimmermann sent a message to Mexico proposing that they side with Germany in the case of war breaking out between Germany and the US. Germany said that in return, they will give Mexico back the Texas territory they lost to the US. Mexico declined the offer.

    Congress passess this act that legalizes the draft system. There is a lot of controversy, people said that is was destroying home democracy. President signed the bill into law anyways.

    Austrian Archduke, Francis Ferdinand is assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia by The Black Hand (a terrorist group).

    Mata Hari is tried by a military court, and it sentenced to death by a firing squad.

    She is taken by car that morning from her prison cell and is rumored to have said “I am ready.” The sentence is carried out near Paris, France. She was 41 years old.

    Germany signs a peace treaty with the new Bolshevik government of Russia. This treaty allows Germany to receive large amounts of land. This newly found peace on the Eastern Front allows Germany to switch to the Western front, and poses immense new problems for France, Britain and America.

    This battle was the first major American offensive of the war. Even though it was a small battle, Americans fought well and moved on to fight larger battles with Germany.
  • The Second Battle of Marne

    This was, in essence, the turning point of the war. This is when the Allies defeated the Central Powers and continued on to the end of the war.
  • World War is Over

    Technically, the fighting stopped in November of 1918, but the war was not yet finished. In order for war to be over, a peace treaty must be signed. There was a conference that took place at the Palace of Versailles near Paris, France. The treaty that was signed was called the Treaty of Versailles.
