In 1916 Woodrow Wilson was reelected to the presidency. He was a strong supporter of American Neutrality. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes was the Republican candidate running against Wilson who lost by over 600,000 popular votes. One of the popular slogans in his reelection was ''He kept us out of the war'' portraying Wilson as a peace maker focused on eeping Americans out of the war.
